GMC May Get An SUV That Looks Like A Hummer To Rival Jeep Wrangler

General Motors might finally be serious about giving GMC some distinctive product, and one that would give the hot-selling Jeep Wrangler some competition.

GM is asking for feedback from GMC dealers about a new model that would go head-to-head with the Jeep and sport some cues from the defunct Hummer brand, sources close to matter told the Wall Street Journal.

Those Hummer styling cues mean this rumored GMC could bear some resemblance to the Hummer Hx concept from the 2008 Detroit Auto Show – or at least share it’s open-topped spirit. That concept was also powered by a 3.6-liter V6 like the current Wrangler and within two inches of the four-door Wrangler Unlimited’s length.

It’s not the first time such an idea has been bounced around, but with Wrangler sales continuing to surge along with SUV sales as an overall category, giving GMC a lifestyle product appears to be making progress. And with fuel prices plummeting in the U.S., some dealers wish GM never killed Hummer during its 2009 Chapter 11 bankruptcy as former customers struggle to find products within the current company portfolio to move to.

GMC’s current line of trucks and SUVs isn’t that different from what’s offered from other GM brands, so any unique product is probably a good thing. Consider, though, that Wrangler rivals like the Toyota FJ Cruiser and even the Hummer H3 have come and gone without making much of a dent in the Jeep’s appeal. It’s just so heavily associated with that brand’s heritage.

But hey GMC, don’t let that stop you.
