2015 VW Golf TDI Averages 81.17 MPG At Road Trip Across 48 States

A 2015 VW Golf TDI has broken the Guinness World Records achievement for “lowest fuel consumption—48 US contiguous States for a non-hybrid car”, averaging just a little over 81 mpg.

The 2015 Golf TDI Clean Diesel traveled 8,233.5 miles (13,250.5 km) around America in 16 days, averaging 81.17 mpg (2.9 l/100 km or 97.5 mpg UK). This means the car only needed $294.98 worth of diesel fuel. The Golf not only beat the previous record of 77.99 mpg (3 l/100 km), but also the hybrid vehicle record of 74.34 mpg (3.16 l/100 km).

The car was driven by Wayne Gerdes, automotive journalist and founder of cleanmpg.com, while Bob Winger, an electronics engineer long involved in energy and conservation projects, acted as a co-driver. Gerdes has set mileage records in more than 100 vehicles, including the previous Guinness World Records title for “lowest fuel consumption—48 U.S. states for a non-hybrid car” in a 2013 Volkswagen Passat TDI (77.99 mpg).

“Volkswagen’s TDI Clean Diesel engines are just amazing. I don’t think people realize the potential mileage you can get from them. In our experience, it is possible to get truly impressive mileage results by using just a few simple fuel-saving techniques,” said Wayne Gerdes.

The 2015 Golf TDI is powered by Volkswagen’s turbocharged and direct-injection Clean Diesel engine, which delivers EPA estimated highway fuel economy of 45 mpg (5.2 l/100 km) when equipped with the six-speed manual transmission.

The car that set the new fuel economy record used Shell ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel and low-rolling resistance Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max tires. The record-setting Golf TDI was also equipped with a Linear Logic ScanGauge II to precisely measure fuel economy, LG G4 smartphones and a Garmin nüvi 57 LM GPS navigator to meet Guinness World Records tracking requirements.

Make sure you watch the video posted below if you want to learn simple fuel saving tips from the man who broke the record.

Not only is does this cat get great mpg. It also does not feel and look like a granny Toyota prius. It wins in many levels.

I own a 2015 Golf TDi, although it’s an awesome car, have yet to see it get 81mpg.. 57mpg is my best, – I’m not complaining about that.. luv the car, would recommend it to anyone!

LOVE my tdi and have tried out other cars like a suburu-only to be horrified by how it drives in comparison. Horrible car that is over fuel injected. Could not do! Have had a TDI for over 15 years now. Can’t change because the engineering on the VW is simply the best.
