GM Opens New Performance And Racing Center In Michigan

The doors to the new General Motors Powertrain Performance and Racing Center have just been opened at the company’s Pontiac Powertrain Campus in Michigan.

The new 111,420 square-foot facility brings together the marque’s Global Powertrain Engineering Center with the racing center that’s been moved from Wixom, Michigan.

The Performance and Racing team produce engines for NASCAR, NHRA, IMSA, IndyCar and other series’ GM racers and connecting it to the Global Powertrain Engineering Center will allow technologies between race car engines and production-vehicle powertrains to be transferred quicker and more efficiently. Included in the new facility are areas for engine assembly, machining, engine testing and calibration/control systems.

“We race to win and learn. This new facility offers unprecedented opportunities to connect our racing engineers and powertrain engineers, integrating their knowledge to give our racers an edge on the track and our customers better vehicles on the road”, said Powertrain Vice President Dan Nicholson.

Some of the engines that will be built at the new racing center include the 2.2-liter twin-turbo V6 from IndyCar, the various units of the 2016 COPO Camaro, the Corvette C7.R’s 5.5-liter V8 and the twin-turbo V6 of the Cadillac ATSV.R.
