Touring Superleggera Presents The Disco Volante Spider [w/Video]

Italian coachbuilder Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera has put an end to teasers by revealing the new Alfa Romeo Disco Volante Spider.

Celebrating the firm’s 90th anniversary, the vehicle is based on the 2012 Coupe model, which in turn was inspired by the 1952 Alfa Romeo C52, known as the Disco Volante (Flying Saucer).

It uses the same chassis as the 8C, but instead of adopting its fabric roof, it comes with two carbon fiber roof panels developed in conjunction with Alfa’s own engineers.

They weigh just 3.5 kg (7.7 lbs) and contribute in lowering the center of gravity. The carbon roof can be removed by hand and stowed in the boot, alongside a bespoke luggage set.

We did not want to compromise the pleasure of driving open top. The car is designed as if there was no roof at all“, said Louis de Fabribeckers, Touring Superleggera’s Head of Design.

Besides the open-top design, the new Disco Volante Spider is painted in Blu Ceruleo (Sky Blue) and its interior is upholstered in beige/black Connolly leather.

There’s no info on its powertrain, but the coupe is powered by the Maserati GranTurismo 4.7-liter V8, which means a total of 450 PS (444 HP) and 470 Nm (347 lb-ft).

The first open-top roadster in the firm’s recent history will be produced in just 7 examples. Full details will be announced in a couple of days, when it will be on display in Switzerland.
