VW’s Sausages Are More Popular Than Its Cars

Beyond being one of the world’s largest automakers, Volkswagen is also a huge producer of currywurst, a special type of sausage particularly popular in Germany.

As a matter of fact, the automaker makes so many sausages that, in 2015, it actually sold more currywurst than it did cars, shifting 7.2 million delicious snacks compared to the 5.82 million cars sold across the Volkswagen Group.

Volkswagen has been producing currywurst since 1973 at a dedicated butchery within the its main manufacturing plant in Germany. To give the sausages a distinct taste, they are smoked over beech wood and available with a special curry ketchup or an ultra-spicy sauce appropriately dubbed “Heaven and Hell”.

In 2015, sales of the sausages increased by 1 million units but due to the ongoing diesel emissions scandal, Volkswagen car sales didn’t enjoy such roaring success. In fact, its automotive sales fell for the first time since 2002. That’ll be a “Hell” sauce, then – extra spicy, sans the “Heaven” ingredient.
