BMW M2 Meets Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 On Track: Which Is Faster?

Since it was first announced, everyone was waiting for the moment when the BMW M2 faced off with AMG’s CLA 45.

Sport Auto brings the two together, a DCT-equipped BMW M2 and a Mercedes CLA45 AMG, in Hockenheimring, to find out which one is the faster.

BMW’s entry-level (purebred) M model
is powered by a 365hp twin-scroll turbocharged 3.0-litre straight six engine sending its power traditionally to the rear wheels via either a six-speed manual, or in this case, a seven-speed double-clutch DCT gearbox.

MercedesAMG model, on the other hand, uses a 376hp turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder mated exclusively to a seven-speed double-clutch gearbox which sends power to all four wheels.

In theory, BMW’s most desirable model has a difficult task against the compact Mercedes and the camera angle gives us a great view of both cars’ dynamic characteristics.

The Merc sounded slower slash not connected to the action.

  • Buzzz Lightsaber

not suprising at all. No one at all was eagerly awaiting this race as it’s evidently shown, the mercedes yet again, make a slower track car, yet more powerful, such as the c63 vs the m4. I bet the m2 was a much funner drive, a nice sound and a more engaged feel than that toy, fart box engine sounding amg.

-> The M2 is faster and more fun than the CLA? Count me in! Although I have to hold it out, since I’m having too much fun with my E46 M3. 🙂

    • Andrewthecarguy

My E93 is a blast especially with M-DCT. Never thought I’d like it over a manual but couldn’t ask for better 🙂

      • Bob Miller

I’d never take DCT over the slick Getrag 6MT but to each his own. I’d take it over SMG, though!

        • Andrewthecarguy

I hear you. That’s something I would have said some time ago. But the DCT is a beast i you want to drive fast.

  • BMWFreaky

judging by the video the M2 can go faster as the driver lost some time drifting and out of tarmac

Don’t take the test seriously. They get the cars from the factory/dealers and they are probably often prepared and not standard. It is only journalists driving so you can not be sure they drive optimal. In this video he is not pushing the Mercedes as much as the Bmw. Next journalists could be bougth or deliberately prefer one make before the other. It was not long time ago german car-journalist was revealed being bougth by one or some german car manufacturers.

    • Andrewthecarguy

Perhaps because the Merc cannot be pushed as hard.

  • Mind Synthetic

i would take the merc purely out of creature comforts

  • Well we saw it coming. Those surprised, raise your hand.

  • RickSanchez1

To my ears, the AMG suffered from massive under steer in every corner.

    • Andrewthecarguy

Good way to put it. There was a disconnect between the engine sound and the steering angle.

  • Sam

I am a life long Mercedes man. They have been my thing for near on 30 years. It has to be said, in 2016, dollar for dollar, a BMW is better than a Mercedes, not only quicker. This test is more proof. The M2 sounds better and looks like the more engaging drive. Bravo BMW, youv’e done well.

    BMW > Mercedes

I sell BMW’s and this is one of the reasons why I take pride in my product every single time and every single model BMW produces kills Mercedes even though most old people prefer Mercedes.
