Toyota Slaps A New Face On 2017 Highlander, Gives It More Grunt Too

Toyota’s family-friendly Highlander SUV has been updated for the 2017MY with a more modern look, more power and an array of available safety features .

The mid-sized three-row SUV now gains a new eight-speed automatic gearbox that will be offered with the updated 3.5-litre V6 engine as standard in FWD and AWD models.

The company promises significant gains in horsepower and fuel efficiency from the updated 3.5-litre V6 petrol with direct fuel injection, but hasn’t provided any specific figures yet. All we know so far is that all V6 models (bar the SE trim level) will now come with a stop and start engine system as standard.

Entry level models will continue using the four-pot 2.7-litre engine, paired to a six-speed automatic, with the Hybrid version to still be the only one with a CVT transmission.

A new upper and lower front grille design is the most obvious change from the previous model, with each trim level to be distinguished by different grille finishes. The rear lights have also been redesigned, with top-spec models getting a chrome trim garnish as well. Customers will be able to get a new brown leather interior on the Limited Platinum trim level.

The sportiest model of the range is the new SE model, which features 19-inch alloy wheels, a sportier suspension setup and a dark paint treatment for the front grille. The new SE grade will also get unique black leather-trimmed seats with silver stitching with matching dash and door inserts.

Toyota has also added the Safety Sense array of systems to the 2017 Highlander, including Pre-Collision System (with Forward Collision Warning and automatic emergency brake), Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beams, Pedestrian Pre- Collision System and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.

Sales of the new 2017 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid are expected to begin in the fall of 2016.

    hideous lower front grill.

  • c3vzn

Best looking front on a Toyota right now. Aggressive without being over the top.

    • Six_Tymes

that’s not saying much. toyota could have done better.

  • Bo Hanan

Minor front impact? Guaranteed grill replacement. Make sure all the females buying this know that.

Toyota Hilux Front Very Aggressive Perfecto!

I have no problem with Toyota going this direction, with a grille that takes over most of the front end. I just hope that others don’t follow them, and if they do, that they do so tastefully.

    • Six_Tymes

who is “others”? if you mean of brands, audi started this design language not toyota. And toyota is not doing it tastefully.

      • MarketAndChurch

I mean the other car brands, such as Honda, Kia, Ford, VW, etc. When a trend gets rolling too fast, people jump on it without giving their own execution of it too much thought. I know Audi started the large grille trend, but I’m talking about Toyota and specifically Lexus application of it. It now covers more of the front end then ever before. Genesis grille are relatively tame, compared to Lexus and Toyota. I’m just hoping no one else follows them, and if they do, that they do so tastefully.

I liked the Highlander a lot. Seems like the only Toyota that had decent styling. I prefer the current front end styling over this new one but it’s still a good looking vehicle.

  • thunder bolt

If I own one, I would add square shaped fog lights down below the front grill, that would make it even more radical.

  • R1S0

ok, what about headlights? still LED low-halogen high beam?

btw i find the current front more appealing than this new one.

  • The current Kluger only looks good with the optional nudge bar.

  • Toronado_II

It lost the little attitude he was having…

  • auto

I hope the spare parts dept. keep plenty of lower grills in stock

  • Subi-Rubicon1

Well this exterior update, err excuse me, this downgrade was absolutely unnecessary! The interior doesn’t look like it was even touched.

  • Braddo

Toyota have lost their touch. This thing included. Hideous OTT styling. That grill – mitsubishi copy – ridiculous.
