Mazda Rolls Out 1 Millionth MX-5 Roadster

One of the most appreciated roadsters of all times, the Mazda MX-5, celebrates yet another milestone, as 1 million units have been delivered to customers worldwide, 27 years after its introduction in April of 1989.

The milestone MX -5 will appear at various events around the globe, starting in May at the Hiroshima Flower Festival in Japan, before heading out to the UK’s Goodwood Festival of Speed in June, from where it will continue its European tour.

From the first generation through to today’s fourth-generation model, the reason we have been able to continue selling the MX-5 all these years is due to the strong support of fans around the world“, said Mazda CEO, Masamichi Kogai.

Over the years, the MX-5 has won around 250 awards with the MX-5 with the latest iteration crowned 2016 World Car of the Year and World Car Design of the Year. Highlighting its success is also the Guinness World Record for the best selling two-seater sports car since 2000.

The current Mazda MX-5 debuted in September 2014, with a 150 mm (6 in) shorter, 20 mm (0.8 in) lower and 10 mm (0.4 in) wider body than its predecessor, riding on a 15 mm (0.6 in) shorter wheelbase. Last month, Mazda introduced a second body style, the “targa” MX-5 RF (Retractable Fastback). The MX-5 Miata starts from $24,915 in the United States, while in Germany, customers can order it from €22,990 ($25,790).
