Having served its purpose as a halo car that would help the brand make headlines, the spartan 4C will be replaced by a somewhat more practical coupe – and an old name might return.

That name is Brera, but unlike the front-wheel drive coupe manufactured by Alfa Romeo between 2005 and 2010, the new one will be based on the same platform as the Giulia and will come with standard RWD and optional AWD, as AutoBild reports.

Wave goodbye to the mid-engine layout, because sharing the underpinnings with the successor of the 159 means that the powertrain will be front-mounted. The engine lineup is believed to be shared with the sedan and a possible Quadrifoglio Verde version could also be part of the package.

It would not be a bad idea, as the range-topping Giulia has a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 developed with Ferrari’s help that churns out 510 PS (503 HP) and 600 Nm (440 lb-ft) of torque.

While the current 4C competes against the likes of the Porsche Cayman and Lotus Elise, the new Brera is believed to go head to head with the BMW 4-Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe. The car won’t use a carbon fiber tub like the 4C, so production costs will be lower and will reflect into its final price range, estimated at €40,000 to €60,000 (~$45,000-67,000).
