Renault Clio RS Grows More Muscle, Could Get 250 HP

Quite a busy year for Renault this one, as it has embarked on a barrage of new models in almost every segment.

Whether it be SUVs in all shapes and sizes, MPVs, station wagons, it has all bases covered.

At the same time, it hasn’t neglected its sporting side. On the contrary: it has just returned to Formula 1 with its own team, launched the Megane GT and, now, is readying an even more extreme version of its hot subcompact hatch.

Renault Sport has gotten around to building a concept that looks like a Clio RS that has got to the gym and came out with a meaner look.

The concept that is going to be revealed next week at the Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix features flared wheel arches, larger side skirts and rear wing and cooling air outlets on the front wings.

According to The Automobilist, it will probably get a 30 HP power hike over the 220 HP existing RS, for a total of 250 ponies. That’s quite a lot for a small hatch and, if it is indeed true, then the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint should drop closer to the 6.0-second mark, from the regular RS’s already impressive 6.6 time.

    Now we’re talking !

Then buying a VW Golf GTI (which isn’t same class, also, unless thinking about Golf R) is worthless after this thing. Nice.

    • Vassilis

The Golf GTI isn’t really worth it anyway when you can get the Leon Cupra for much less or the Focus RS for a little more. Generally speaking though, if you want a larger car for its added practicality it’s worth going up a segment.

Actually you’re right, even a Skoda Octavia RS230 would be better than a Golf GTI (which are has same platforms).

Well, it didn’t lack power. It lacked feel and enjoyment.

Hmm, this might be able to get this gen Clio RS out of its predecessors shadow.

The name of the car seems to be the Clio R.S.16!

Quite strange that this picture has a yellow rear wing instead of the black one from the other pictures…

    Still needs a manual transmission

“closer to 6 seconds mark” with 250hp in a small car ? Now you see how inefficient a front-wheel drive setup is, when a full-blown BMW 330i sedan, at the same 250hp but heavier by some 300 kgs, does it in less than 6 seconds with a manual gearbox and even faster with the automatic.

  • Vassilis

Bit by bit they’re getting closer to how the car should have been released in the first place. Next up, a manual gearbox.

Growing muscle is nice. Removing the two back doors and putting a manual shift too would be better.

Really not a fan of this generation Clio, plus it seriously needs a 3-door variant
