Toyota Surprises Us With GT 86 Shooting Brake Concept

In a surprising turn of events, Toyota has pulled the covers off a Shooting Brake version of the four-year old GT 86 in concept form.

Revealed in Sydney, Australia, by the Toyota 86 global chief engineer Tetsuya Tada, the study was developed by the brand’s Production Design team in Oz and was hand-built in Japan.

The Toyota 86 lends itself perfectly to a concept that expands its appeal with added versatility while retaining its sleek and sporty coupe styling and sharp, responsive driving character“, said the Toyota Australia Divisional Manager National Marketing, Brad Cramb.

Toyota’s latest study that has brought more practicality to the GT 86 is more than just “show and tell”, as it is a fully functional vehicle that was already put through its paces on some test tracks. However, despite seeming ready to hit the road as the second body of the RWD compact coupe, its future remains uncertain.

While we never say never, and I would love this concept to become a production reality, it is very much a concept that demonstrates the passion within Toyota for cars that are fun to drive“, Tetsuya Tada.

There are no powertrain details available on the new 86 Shooting Brake. The coupe is powered by a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-four shared with the Subaru BRZ, which develops 205 PS (202 HP) and 156 pound-feet (212 Nm) of torque on the 2016 MY, when equipped with a manual gearbox, while the six-speed automatic remains at 200 PS (197 HP) and 151 lb-ft (205 Nm).
