Volvo XC90 T8 Pumped By Polestar To 421 HP

Polestar has a proven track record of making Volvos perform better, but this latest range of performance enhancements the most powerful Volvo yet.

The upgrades are designed specifically the flagship XC90 T8 Twin Engine, and increase output from 400 hp and 472 lb-ft of torque to 421 horsepower and 500 lb-ft. That’s rather remarkable when you consider that it’s all coming from a tiny 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine – albeit turbocharged, supercharged, with direct injection, and boosted by an electric motor. The result is a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) of 5.5 seconds, without hampering the plug-in hybrid’s economy.

Volvo’s in-house tuning department also promises better response from the throttle and transmission as part of the package, making the hybrid crossover feel faster as well as go faster. As a result of the enhancements, it will hold a lower gear in the corner, keeping it tight and preventing a mid-corner shift that could unsettle the vehicle’s handling.

The enhancements are available immediately, and we suspect it won’t be long before they’re made available on the lighter S90 sedan and V90 wagon as well.

  • Volvo Renaissance Gone Astray

I applaud Volvo’s renaissance. However, I am more interested in mileage numbers that I am horsepower numbers and this where Volvo is going astray. Well, that and its exorbitant pricing on this model when you apply the options one would want. The core value of Volvo has always been safety…it’s time focus again on that value.

Volvo had to move the bar to this level. If not, you would not be writing anything about Volvo because without this new strategy, there would not be a Volvo. Weather you agree of not, horsepower is important to some buyers, but the core value remains safety. With that, the price will increase because of new safety technologies. Compared to the other vehicles in this segment Volvo is competing, the XC90 and S90 (equipped similarly) cost thousands less than any thing from Germany.

A nicely loaded 850 Turbo wagon would cost about $33,500 in 1992. Using my inflation calculator, that works out to $57,000 in 2016 dollars. You could buy a fairly decent 2016 XC90 for that price.

This is great news for the few who want more HP but for most folks T5 and T6 are enough for a luxury SUV.
