The time for a light refresh has come for VW’s entry-level model, with now gains a sportier –but not a proper hot– version.

Volkswagen has given the Up a fresh front bumper and newly designed headlights with LED daytime running lights, a new range of alloy wheels up to 17-in in diameter, redesigned rear lights and a rear diffuser because who wouldn’t want some extra downforce on their way to the grocery shop.

The cabin has been similarly updated and now offers ten different dashboard panel designs with VW using what is known as the in-mould-labelling process. The also new ambient lighting is color-coded depending on which version you go for (white for high up!, orange for cross up! or blue for e-up!) while new seat designs are also available.

An optional infotainment system has a five-inch color display and comes with a smartphone dock for devices up to 5.5inches in size, allowing you to use your mobile as a fully integrated navigation and app running system via Bluetooth. VW also added the option of a climate system with an allergen filter.

The engine range comes with the familiar two version of the company’s 1.0-litre petrol, offering 59hp (60PS) and 74hp (75PS) while the range-topping version now uses the turbocharged 1.0-litre TSI three-cylinder engine known from the Golf, tuned to produce 88hp (90PS) and 118lb ft (160Nm) of torque available from 1,500 to 3,000rpm.

The new VW Up TSI can accelerate from nought to 62mph (0-100km/h) in under 10 seconds and up to a top speed of 115mph (185km/h) with the company claiming a combined fuel consumption of just 64.2mpg UK (4.4lt/100km). A manual five-speed gearbox is the only option for the fastest member of the Up range.

Lesser versions can be optionally equipped with a five-speed Automated Shift Gearbox. Finally the smaller model VW makes comes with driver assistance systems like City Emergency Braking, cruise control, park radar and a reversing camera.
