That extra pedal, for which car collectors pay ridiculous amounts to have in their prized possessions, has turned out to be a huge drawback for an attempted carjacker, who wasn’t able to drive away.
According to Oak Lawn police department, cited by ChicagoTribune, 23-year old Ladell T. Cox asked for a dollar from the car’s owner, just when he was returning to his vehicle, for which he made a payment at a nearby dealership. As the undisclosed model was quietly sitting around in the parking lot of Credit Union 1, Cox asked for the keys, as he displayed what appeared to be a handgun, but was only a replica, as officers later discovered. The owner obeyed, only to watch Cox get baffled by the gearstick lever, as he sat behind the wheel.
This is when, normally, an average carjacker would make a run for it, either with the vehicle or on foot, but the 23-year old demanded the owner to drive him to his destination and made another mistake, handing over the keys before he got back into the car, only to watch the man drive off.
A witness inside Credit Union 1 already contacted the police, after seeing the whole incident, which arrived shortly and took Cox into custody, charging him with aggravated attempted hijacking.
