Toyota Celebrates Corolla’s 50th Anniversary With JDM Axio Special

Fifty years ago, Toyota first introduced the Corolla and, to mark the occasion, it has rolled out this special edition in its home market, with retro trim derived by its progenitor from 1966.

The celebratory edition is based on the G Hybrid version of the Corolla Axio, a very different model to the one sold in the US (which also got its own special edition). It’s offered in either pearl white or black mica, with a red and black interior with synthetic leather.

The specific shade of red was electronically measured by the automaker’s design division to faithfully reproduce the exact shade that featured on the original half a century ago. It also features retro badges referencing the garland of flowers – “corolla” in Latin – from which the model’s name was taken.

The special throwback model will be showcased alongside the original at the upcoming classic car show at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba City. Buyers will be able to order one through the Toyota Corolla dealer network (separate from the Toyopet and Netz chains) for 2,400,000 yen, or roughly $23,000.

That is a sad looking tribute.

  • they should ve remade the original corolla, like the former ford gt. this tribute is just so poor for a 50 yr anniversary.

Each one more disappointing than the last, from the 90’s onward…

I really like the 2003 to 2008 models. The ninth generation – I think. Surprisingly solid and comfortable. And very well built.

That original one looks real cute!

That’s what we call “The real Corolla”.

I like it, in its subtle way. Parked next to the classic, it’s definitely a fitting homage.

Mr. Akio, I have Several Questions.

    A.T: Yes?

    1. Is it actually small?

    A.T: By today’s standards?

    2. Is it sporty?

    A.T: …It’s a hybrid…

    3. Lightweight?

    A.T: …

    4. Rear-Wheel Drive?

    A.T: I…uh

    5. TWO DOORS?

    A.T: (sighs)…no…

Final Question. Is this a 50th anniversary edition that celebrates the Corolla?

    A.T: …Yes?…

Wrong. You aren’t celebrating hard enough. And this car brings shame to the Corolla lineage. GOODBYE.
