One of the brightest and most distinctive McLaren P1s to leave the factory will cross the auction block in Monterey next month at Mecum Auctions annual sale.
Rather incredibly, this particular P1 is chassis number 2 and therefore the earliest example privately owned as the British marque kept 001 to itself. While that in itself is quite special, it is far from the standout feature of this P1.
The obvious headliner of the car is its exposed green-tinted carbon fiber body. The model originally rolled off the production line in early 2014 with a painted carbon fiber body, just like all other P1s. In 2015, McLaren announced that it would offer a handful of P1s with exposed carbon bodies, offering owners the choice to have their cars shipped back to the factory and overhauled with all new panels.
The owner of this P1 did just that and between September last year and December, the model was transformed with the green carbon components. The original painted panels were then shipped back to the customer. Of all 375 P1s produced, it is believed that this example and the blue carbon unit from the Geneva Motor Show are the only two to have undergone the comprehensive modifications.
Making the car all the more eye-catching are its matte green forged wheels and the green carbon accents adorning the cabin.
Pre-auction estimates suggest the car will sell for between $2.5 million and $3 million.
