NASCAR is renowned for its massive crashes, pile-ups and all round drama, but at the recent Xfinity Series race at Watkins Glen, something unique happened.

While cruising through the course’s bus stop after having slowed on the track, Derrike Cope’s car unexpectedly exploded, leaving the No. 70 Chevrolet utterly destroyed.

NASCAR’s sanctioning body has confirmed that it will impound the car to examine it at its research and development center. At this stage, it is difficult to determine what went wrong with the race car. Some speculate that the vehicle’s supercharger may have exploded or alternatively, it is possible that the hot brakes caused the tires to burst.

Whatever the case may be, the damage caused is clear. The front-end was severely damaged and the hood bent and crippled into submission.
