All-New 2017 Mini Countryman Matures And Grows Into Its 2nd Generation

With Mini’s latest Countryman getting even closer to its official debut, our spy photographers have caught this black tester in Germany.

We’ve known for some time that the new-generation model will grow by around 150mm (5.9 inches) to 4.25 meters (167.3 inches) in length. It also shares the same ULK1 modular platform as the Clubman and the latest BMW X1, which suggests not only a larger exterior, but a longer wheelbase as well.

Thanks to these slightly more revealing images, we can take a better look at the car’s appearance, which does indicate a wider and taller body, which together with the increased length, will give way to a more spacious and comfortable interior, as well as a bigger boot space that the current model’s 450 liters.

Powering the new Countryman should be Mini’s latest 3-cylinder and 4-cylinder turbo engines, with a 228 HP (231 PS) John Cooper Works version taking its place as the rightful range-topper.

We’re also expecting a plug-in hybrid version, utilizing a three-cylinder 1.5-liter petrol unit and an electric motor powering the rear axle. Where the petrol unit will develop 136 HP and 162 lb-ft (219 Nm), the rear-mounted electric motor is said to provide 88 HP and 122 lb-ft (165 Nm), according to recent reports. Estimated electric range should be around 38 km (24 miles), as the car could get up to about 50 mph (80 km/h) on electric power alone. A couple months back, we also learned that this so called ‘Mini Countryman E’ would be able to hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.5 seconds.

While we haven’t heard a lot of leaks regarding the new Countryman’s on-board tech, it’s safe to say we’ll be looking at a safer and more connected car than its predecessor. Though we could see the Countryman debut as early as October at the 2016 Paris Auto Show, its JCW & PHEV versions won’t follow until next year.
