The third episode in Sung Kang’s ongoing Ford Maverick ‘Underdog’ transformation systems has been released telling the story of Alexis Hernandez.

For the project, Kang is helping to teach through local school students how to work on a car and the story of Hernandez is perhaps the most heartbreaking and, at the same time, inspiring.

Born with a serious condition where his heart was on the wrong side of his body, Hernandez struggles with everyday activities like walking because of his weak heart. Despite that, he is playing a key role in bringing to life the heavily modified Maverick, set to debut at SEMA later this year.

Heartbreakingly, Hernandez’s father passed away just two weeks ago from a heart attack in the middle of the project. Despite this personal tragedy, Alexis continues to play his part with the car’s creation and was recently awarded a scholarship to the Universal Technical Institute (UTI).

From a previously-released sketch previewing the transformed Maverick, we know that it will be adorned with custom bodywork and powered by the 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder of the current Ford Mustang.
