Volkswagen has denied reports that it will build a massive battery production facility in Germany.

In May, it was reported that the company wanted to create its own battery plant to power its future range of electric vehicles and allow it to break free from existing battery suppliers. According to company chief executive Matthias Muller, this isn’t happening.

While speaking with local paper Handelsblatt and reported by EE Times Europe, Muller called such a plan “nonsense” and shut down speculation such a move would create lots of jobs, saying that the battery production process is highly automated. He also said that it would be “extremely expensive” to build such a factory.

Given the company’s seemingly never-ending issues surrounding its cheating of diesel emissions testing, it make sense that the firm isn’t interested in such a project.

Interestingly, Muller concluded the interview by saying that Volkswagen is investigating the battery production process chain and confirmed the marque will detail its future battery strategy by the end of the year.
