Chevrolet has set a new world record for the largest flag pulled by a moving vehicle, in a promotional stunt for the new 2017 Silverado HD.

The massive American flag, nearly 320 square feet (280 square meters) in size and measuring almost 40 x 80 feet, needed to be towed 328 feet (100 m) without touching the ground to claim the record. Chevrolet smashed that mark. In fact, the Silverado managed to complete four laps with the flag around the 1.5-mile oval of Texas Motor Speedway.

To achieve the record, Chevrolet opted for the potent Silverado HD installed with the company’s Duramax 6.6-liter V8 turbo-diesel engine. Compared to the previous Duramax V8, the new one delivers 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque, meaning it could tow the huge flag without an issue.

According to the vehicle’s chief engineer Erin Stanczak, “The new Duramax delivers impressive output, but what customers will appreciate the most is an improved driving experience. It delivers quicker acceleration in all measures, more confidence when trailering up a steep grade, better engine braking on descent and more refined noise levels cruising on the highway.”

Playing a key role in the updated engine’s improved horsepower and torque figures are its use of a bespoke air intake system that includes a functional hood scoop.
