Few Ferrari models are quite as recognizable as the 308 GTS, a car which skyrocketed to fame and became kind of an icon of the ’80s thanks to Magnum PI.

While recently checking out Fusion Luxury Motors in California, The Smoking Tire’s Matt Farah had the opportunity to take an immaculate 1978 308 GTS onto the local streets to discover what the iconic model is all about.

Beneath the skin, the 308 GTS utilizes a 2.9-liter naturally-aspirated V8 engine pushing out 240 PS (237 hp) at 7,000 rpm to the rear wheels. By modern standards, such a horsepower figuure is less than most hot hatches let alone any current Ferraris. However, for a vehicle that weighs around 2,835 pounds (1,286 kg), it is certainly enough to have some fun.

The car Farah got his hands on is a completely original and unrestored example which despite its age, is in excellent running condition and from both the inside and outside, looks and feels like it just like the factory.

For those that love classic Ferrari models on a budget, it’s hard to look past the 308.
