U Spy: What’s Going On With These Corvettes Prototypes Spotted Testing?

The Corvette may be just one of Chevy’s many models, but it always seems to have a new version in the works – whether it’s an all-new generation or a new variation on the existing one. Take these ‘Vettes, for example, spied undergoing testing in the Rockies.

While GM is widely expected to be preparing a completely new mid-engined model to replace (or potentially complement) the current line, these factory prototypes clearly still carry their engines up front. Whether covered or not, they bear the unmistakable silhouette of the current C7.

Now there could be any number of reasons why Chevrolet would be putting examples of the current Corvette through its paces, now three years since its introduction. But the prospect that tickles our fancy the most is the possibility of a new ZR1 – even if none of these vehicles are packing the big rear wing we’ve seen on some (but not all) ZR1 prototypes so far.

The mack daddy of Corvettes, ZR-1s (with or without the dash) traditionally offer even more power and performance than any other – including the Z06. Given that the current Z06 already packs 650 horsepower and just as much torque from its 6.2-liter supercharged V8 to eclipse the previous ZR1’s output, the new C7 ZR1 could pass the 700 mark… and maybe keep on going.

With the outgoing Dodge Viper producing 640 horsepower and the new Ford GT stated to deliver more than 600 (and potentially upwards of 700), GM’s flagship performance model has its bragging rights to protect, after all.
