Iconic 1963 Lincoln Continental Offered At Auction With No Reserve

This 1963 Lincoln Continental represents a great chance for someone to own a classic piece of American automotive history.

The car is described as a clean example that went through a full color change from white to black during the previous owner’s 30-year tenure and is powered by a 7.0-litre (430ci) V8 paired to a three-speed automatic gearbox.

The big Conti was bought recently from the current owner, who mentions some recent work done on the car, including the front bench seat being reupholstered in black leather and most of the brightwork both inside and out re-chromed.

Interior features like the power windows are working as they should, but others like the hydraulically-actuated door locks, the cruise control and the air-conditioning don’t. These niggles though don’t really matter if you think that this Lincoln is one of the most defining luxury cars of the era, featuring these very stylish suicide rear doors and a unique road presence.

The car is being offered at no reserve over at Bring A Trailer right now, with only a few days remaining before the auction ends, so we suggest interested parties head over there and start bidding on this icon.

Better looking than anything Lincoln had sold in about two decades.

I need this. Notice I said “need” not “want”.

Fifty three years… More than half a century since Lincoln built a world class car. Any of the original owners are surely dead by now. You would have thought that at least once during that span of time, someone at Lincoln would have had it in them to cut the crap.

If Ford were to sit the inelegant upcoming Continental side-by-side next to this gorgeous car, it would be a visual case study in failure. It would be almost too embarrassing to witness.

This car very much needs a spiritual successor.

From watching WheelerDealers, I know the door locks are a vacuum system. I don’t know about the cruise control. The biggest problem with the A/C and heating system is that it seems that the entire car’s built around the heater core, which is probably shot, and the A/C recharge uses tremendously expensive refrigerant.
My grandfather had one of these in turquoise, and was stopped for driving too slowly on the Florida Tpk. I remember the instrument binnacle was tiny and minimal, one of the first to make a car into an appliance.
It’s truly a parade float, though the ’59 and ’60 were way bigger. We’re talking acreage.

This vehicle is about the simplicity of elegance. Simple lines, transformed with some chrome, in the right places, and those wheels, whitewalls, and suicide doors add the elegance.
This is a lovely example of what Lincoln was, and can be again.
