Is The 2017 Lincoln Continental A Worthy Contender In The Luxury Mid-Size Class?

If you’re looking for an alternative to run-of-the-mill German premium saloons, the 2017 Lincoln Continental seems to be a case worth considering.

At least that’s what Kelley Blue Book editor Micah Muzio seems to think, after taking a quick look at a car that’s full of advanced tech and makes for an extremely comfortable drive.

If the appearance of the exterior isn’t enough to peak your curiosity, the built-in door handles might just do the trick. And don’t worry if the battery dies, because there are two other ways in which you can open the doors.

Inside, the new Continental looks very comfortable, especially in the back. Also, if you go for the rear seating package, you get functions like cooled and heated seats, a massage feature and access to the car’s infotainment system.

On the road, the 2017 Continental may not be the sportiest car you can buy, but when equipped with the 400 HP, 400 lb-ft (542 Nm) 3.0-liter V6 petrol engine, it can certainly cover ground in a hurry.

Prices currently start at $44,560, for which you get a 3.7-liter V6 with 305 HP and plenty of cool features such as 10-way heated power front seats, rear seat AC/heat vents, SYNC3, 8″ LCD touchscreen, Lincoln Premium Audio System with 10 speakers, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, wood trim for the door panels, console and media bin, a leather-wrapped steering wheel plus a whole lot more.

How do you feel about getting into one of these instead of something like an Audi A6, Cadillac CTS and the rest of the mid-size premium gang?

okay ford, I like it.. not as good as my 72, but I like it.

  • Mark S

Nice Color! I’ll leave it at that.

  • JudeK

    Lincoln did a great job.

  • mccarluvr123

The Continental is solidly full-sized. Although its price is in line with typical mid-sized luxury sedans, its footprint is not. The Fusion with which it shares a platform may be mid-sized, but the platform was stretched considerably to be used for this car.

    • bloggin

Only part of the modified CD4 architecture is used in the front section of the Continental, the mid and rear section is of a different architecture. Consider the architecture part MKZ, part MKS and part MKT with more new components added.

  • Six Thousand Times

It does indeed look comfortable and that 400hp V-6 seems like fun. I don’t care for the styling, though. Like the DTS, it’s obvious the designers hastily adapted it from a RWD car by taking a chunk from the front.

And that Micah Muzio is a doofus.

    • dumblikeyou2

Can’t take that guy anymore either.

    • ChrisInIL

I think the correct description of Muzio is “cheesy doofus”.

  • TheBelltower

At least it’s something for the Lincoln showroom that may help distract from the nasty Navigator. And it’ll sell because it looks like an honest effort. But compared to the Germans, Cadillac, Tesla or Jaguar, this is pretty dull.

    • Andrewthecarguy

The segment is crowded yes, but I think this is VERY remarkable. I don’t think it’s dull at all. My guess is that it looks much better in person, and the power numbers are impressive.

      • TheBelltower

Looking forward to seeing it in person. I really like some of the details. The door handle design helps to reduce the number of visual boogers that designers try to eliminate. But then they went and added that horsey-looking chrome wart beneath the A-pillar that serves no purpose. The front end design is powerful, though the lower half is very conventional. The rear design is soft and is reminiscent of a lot of Fords from the 1990’s. I believe the rear end will look hooptie very quickly. The seats look amazing. The dashboard, particularly the upper portion, looks very dated. Also, offering FWD as standard automatically establishes it as something less than a real luxury car. A world class car, let alone a luxury car, should not chirp their front wheels at stoplights. Frankly, I doubt I will ever drive this Continental. It’s not compelling enough. But they will be nice to check out once they are on the road.

        • Andrewthecarguy

Very good points. I think the issue is that Ford couldn’t spend as much as it truly wanted to bring something to market, so this effort does look a bit less. That said, I think it is a good entry into the field. Some people simply do not want to be seen in the usual suspects, and I think this fits well.

    • Cobrajet

      Telsa is way more dull.

      • TheBelltower

Maybe you’re right. The Tesla isn’t the flying car that we were promised in the 60s. But I’d say that over 400,000 pre-orders for a car that isn’t launching for two years would be evidence suggesting that Tesla isn’t dull. Any guesses on how many paid pre-orders the Continental has? 400k perhaps?

  • Bash

    i just love those seats!!

  • Craig

I like it. It’s very nice. But every time I look at it I think to myself, “Lincoln needs to bring back the Town Car. A bigger, more luxurious flagship.”

    • Andrewthecarguy

Bigger more lux should be in the works indeed. Cadillac done it, though I do not le their offering. Lincoln has a real shot at something super nice.

    • Carlo

Please bring back the Town Car! Why can’t there be at least one modern true full size sedan! Rwd and awd ecoboost V6 and Coyote V8 power 10 Speed automatic, aluminum Construction and the Town Cars glorious length and width! Bring back what an American car luxury car should be!

  • dumblikeyou2

This reviewer is douchbaggary at its zenith.

And this car had the Chinese market in mind, not America.

  • carsrcool

It seems to have a lot going for it feature-wise, strong (optional) motor etc., but the exterior style ? Whew ! What a super bland design …..

  • LIZ THE SHIZ

Micah Muzio reminds me of a wannahbeee lame comedian who gets booed and yanked off the stage at open mike night at the local comedy club , give him the hook

  • Finally ! Hope to see this in Europe or in my country ,in front of the Five Star Hotel Continental in Bucharest !

  • bonzomatic

Finally someone actually showed us the rear seat controls! I can’t count the number of articles and pictures I’ve seen that give one shot from the side but not a single close-up of the center console.

  • antbee

I’ve seen a few of these on the roads up here in Canada, and they are head-turners. I wouldn’t mind going to the Lincoln dealership and kicking the tires a bit. It’s too bad it is FWD, and not RWD, It’s great you can get AWD as an option, but it sure is a premium option, like only in a package. I love the colour used in the video, and the seats look very comfortable, but I think 30-way adjustment is rather over-the-top.
This was my first experience seeing and hearing this guy, Micah Muzio, that quite a few of you can’t stand, but I think he’s great! He brings a bit of fun and levity to what could have been a very buttoned-up review for a Lincoln vehicle. Plus, he is cute!
