Two prototypes of the next-generation Bentley Continental were recently filmed undergoing testing at the Nurburgring.

Both prototypes, in coupe and convertible forms, have vastly different exteriors to the outgoing models with clear inspiration taken from the EXP10 Speed 6 concept car. As such, they have a lower, more streamlined front fascia with two enlarged inner headlights and then a smaller light on either side. The squared-off rear wheel arches further distinguish them from the current range as does the more sporty profile

These particular prototypes appear to be testing out the Volkswagen Group’s latest twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter W12 engine, first introduced by the Bentley Bentayga last year. When fitted within the British brand’s SUV, that engine delivers 608 hp so far the new Continental, a nearly identical figure can be expected.

Beyond the W12, the 2018 Continental range will be available with a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8, recently snapped testing disguised as a Porsche Panamera. Beyond these two, a plug-in hybrid could be added to the range.

Underpinning the new Continental range will be the same MSB platform as the latest Porsche Panamera, meaning significant weight savings can be expected over the current car, thanks largely to the use of aluminum.
