Toyota Roomy And Tank Minivans Launch In Japan

Toyota has just launched the new Roomy and Tank available exclusively in the Japanese market.

Both the new models are offered solely with a small 1.0-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine, which delivers 140 Nm of torque, a figure which Toyota says is more reflective of a 1.5-liter. This engine comes standard alongside a CVT transmission and can be paired to either front- or all-wheel drive.

Given that both models are about moving people in comfort, it’s no surprise that the brand is at pains to point out some of the key interior features. These include rear seats which can be moved forward by up to 240 mm, allowing for four suitcases to be loaded into the cargo space while still carrying five occupants.

Additionally, the rear seats can be reclined by up to 70 degrees to offer occupants sleeping space. There’s also walkthrough front seats which makes ingress and egress between the front and rear seats very simple.

Elsewhere, the new Roomy and Tank include a 5-liter removable center trash bin, a 4.2-inch TFT color display and a wide array of storage spaces.

Also found within both models is a collision avoidance assist system which has five key functions. It includes collision avoidance brake assist, a line deviation warning function, an accidental-start control component for forward and backward starts, collision warning for other vehicles and pedestrians and finally, a system which notifies the driver that the vehicle ahead has started moving forward.

Prices for the models range between 1.46 million yen ($14,200) and 2.008 million yen ($19,600).

  • TheHake

Man I really like this! Very roomy inside! Does it’s name justice!

    • RDS Alphard

Also being a as tough as a tank … not !

      • TheHake

        It’s as ugly as a tank…

        • RDS Alphard

I would say tank is a looker , lol

  • Bash

I don’t see major or huge differences between the two… in fact to me, one looks like a slightly facelift of the other!!

    • RDS Alphard

You’re right , and Toyota had been doing this since like , 1970s ?

If you know the famous AE86 , there was 2 version from Japan , one called Sprinter Trueno , which American get as Corolla GT-S (or SR5) , and there’s another one called Corolla Levin , which didn’t have pop-up headlights (have they have different taillights too) .

  • disqus_83g6mJmr6l

    they are SO hideously charming…

  • disqus_83g6mJmr6l

    ‘pukishly’ cute

  • ediotsavant

And they say they don’t have taste! If Americans weren’t so huge and heavy, they would sell like hot cakes.

    • gary4205

They would sell well in America, especially at those prices. Americans are bigger than Japanese and Europeans because of generations of proper nutrition and availability of food. We are not sorry about that.

      • RDS Alphard

It won’t be $14,200 to $19,600 in North America due to taxes & import fees

  • RDS Alphard

There’s also a Daihatsu version called “Thor” , it used all 4 looks from Toyota (Roomy , Roomy Custom , Tank , Tank Custom) .

    • Eythan Aldrich

Not just that Subaru also has that recently and yup the Justy is back……also I found out that The Daihatsu Coo/Materia/Toyota bB, Toyota Ractis/Subaru Trezia and Toyota Corolla Rumion/Scion xB are all GONE

      • RDS Alphard

I’m not surprised those 3 are gone , because they’re old , really old .

        Daihatsu Coo/Daihatsu Materia/Toyota bB/Subaru Dex were from 2005/2006
Toyota Ractis/Subaru Trezia were from 2010
Toyota Corolla Rumion/Scion xB were from 2007

it is time to have a replacement , and Roomy/Tank could very well be it .

        • Eythan Aldrich

          Good point.

          • RDS Alphard

Plus , C-HR will be in Japan somewhere in 2016 or 2017 , it should filled the “odd ball” choice for Toyota

          • Eythan Aldrich

only one way one to find as it’s a rival of the vezel/hr-v and juke

  • Charlie Miles

OMG I want one so bad. Not kidding. Seems like a maximization of economy and space. So practical.
Actually I want to be 17 again and blast the speakers and generally misuse it. And cold air intake.

  • Ary Wisesa

    I love it. It’s very Japanese. 🙂
You got to visit Japan to appreciate the way they maximize their space, be it house or cars. So many cute kei cars in Japan, and they looks just right and very Japanese. Kei cars on the streets of Japanese cities or villages really look cool. LOL. Come to Japan and you will understand what I’m talking about. 🙂

  • Six Thousand Times

    You had me at Tank.

  • KidRed

What the pokemon-shit is this? haha

  • Auto

I am amazed. This car seems to be a box on wheels. How does it past safety tests? And where does the engine go? Wouldn’t it be really noisy inside the cabin? And if the engine does fit up front, that would make the car really slow because the engine would have to be miniscule.
