Volvo’s New V90 Cross Country Looks Like The Perfect Crossover

Volvo brought their 2017 V90 Cross Country to Los Angeles for its first motorshow appearance.

The new Volvo V90 Cross Country is the latest member of the 90-series model family and it’s no other but the rugged all-weather derivative. It’s been almost 20 years ago since Volvo brought out the first Cross Country model, with the latest one tested in the harshest of conditions, ranging from the frozen north of Sweden to the searing desert heat of Arizona.

Volvo has yet to release any technical details about the differences between the regular V90 and V90 XC models. All we know is that the new V90 XC offers more ground clearance, the bodywork features the traditional extra plastic cladding and that the all-wheel drive is naturally standard to all versions.

“We were very careful from the very beginning to ensure that the Cross Country concept was not just an exercise in rugged styling. We placed high demands on real-world capability, and as we developed the segment we added the comfort and convenience elements that Volvo drivers have come to expect,” said Dr Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research & Development at Volvo Car Group.

Most of the engines offered in the regular S90/V90 models are expected to find their way into the V90 XC, with the model in the photos being the range-topping T6 version, meaning a twincharged (turbo+supercharger) 2.0-litre petrol with 315hp (320PS) living under the bonnet.

Volvo says that production of the new V90 XC will begin this autumn at the company’s Torslanda factory in Sweden.

To me, this is the epitome of rugged, understated, tasteful modern automotive design.

… and then everything is ruined those 2 liter inline-4 engines.

      • mccarluvr123

For most people, the 4-cylinder engines offer all the power they will ever need or use. And for those who want more, there’s always the T8 (assuming Volvo will offer it in this model).

        • europeon

          T8 is a 2l l4 engine too.

          • mccarluvr123

I’m aware. It also has an electric motor and 400hp.

        • salamOOn

This is not about power, it is about reliability. 4pot with turbo and supercharger with 300+hp?! good luck with that!

This car with 6 cylinder would be an absolute enjoyment!

          • europeon

It’s also about smoothness, fuel consumption to some extent, power delivery, and (most important for me) sound.

Love this wagon… since i cannot afford this the next best thing is the Subaru outback

  • Hmmmmmm…

It simply doesn’t look right to me. It just looks like a car someone jacked into the air. The matte finish looks wrong too.

    • mccarluvr123

I have to disagree with you there. I’m normally not a fan of matte-finishes, but here it’s done well. The matte finish, in this color, makes the car look very modern and rugged.

” It just looks like a car someone jacked into the air.”

and thats the thing i love about this car…

  • ErnieB

I think this new design language fits the crossover/SUV look better than the sedan/wagon.. I happen to like the matte color on this car.. it’s perfect imo. I have a feeling This will sell better than the outgoing xc70 which I own and liked very much.

  • The price ?

  • nauticalone

Very nice. Wish it had a 6 cylinder option though!

  • TheHake

Love it. But it’s a pity that it is SUPER expensive, especially for a car made in China.

    • Sid

      It’s made in Sweden.

      • TheHake

They moved production of the S90 and V90 to China.

  • I hate that it looks better than our XC70

  • Alasdair Underwood

I think it looks disgusting. It takes my favourite looking car in recent times, the lovely, elegant and graceful (especially in Mussel Blue on 20’s) V90 and ruins it completely with unnecessary plastic tat. Like someone in an evening gown with a sleeve tatoo. Ruined
