Leonardo DiCaprio Is Now A Brand Ambassador For BYD Auto

Academy Award-winning actor and environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio is now a brand ambassador for Chinese EV-maker BYD Auto.

According to Sixth Tone, the actor will help promote the company’s new-energy vehicles in China throughout 2017, pushing a similar agenda to the one he had last year when he formed his own team for the Beijing edition of the FIA Formula E championship.

“All over the world people are realizing that cars that run on fossil fuels are inefficient and a major threat to the planet,” stated the movie star. “I am very pleased to be joining an effort to increase the number of clean vehicles on the road in China and beyond.”

A report from website EV Sales found that between January and October of this year, BYD sold over 84,000 units, considerably more than Tesla, which sold 58,000 units. In China however, with more than 98% of electric vehicles currently produced by domestic companies, BYD has very little to fear from the American-EV maker.

Also, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, there’s been a year-on-year increase of 82.2% regarding new-energy vehicles sold there, or approximately 337,000 units in the first 10 months of 2016.

Furthermore, with China emitting more greenhouse gases than any other nation, electric cars are becoming more and more popular. Meanwhile the government is even offering subsidies as high as 90,000 yuan ($13,000) in order to encourage the use of EVs.

    Leo the commie.

    • John Doll

      Leo is a fraud.

      • Bash

        I bet they just couldn’t catch him……. 😀

    • kello3000

Hmm, according recent polls about the GOP and their supporters’ attitudes towards Russia they seem to be the new commies…

Also, if this news is any indication most new jobs created by the EV industry is going to go to China instead of the US no doubt partly thanks to a certain ultimately wise and glorious president elect.

Not sure tho, could be that then news I read is fake?

    • Big Black Duck

so is the internet…you should pay 1 cent for every letter you type..

      • drano66

Yeah, I already paid through my internet provider, thank you for reminding me!

  • Day_Trader

Carscoops, please, don’t title him as “environmental activist”. What a joke. He’s no different than Gore.

  • John Doll

Maybe Leo “The Environmentalist” should give up his private yacht and private jet. He is such a phony.

  • Obsequious Lickspittle

So Xiānshēng Chuanfu, you’re quite sure that the denominations are very high and all notes are non sequential?

    That’s wonderful!

  • MultiKdizzle

Looks like the mouthbreathers are out in force today.

    • smartacus

i loved watching the media melt down when Hillarity lost,
Now they have no Congress, no Senate, no Supreme Court, very few Governors.
but at least they still have Disney 😀

  • dumblikeyou2

I don’t mind Leo as an actor, and totally get why the initial reactions to him would be negative, but using empty-headed celebs that are half-hearted has always worked in the past. How else do you get the message out to the empty-headed public, with the guy on the left in this photo? If not for Leo, or any other easily well known celeb, would you have even clicked on this article? Okay, banging multiple chicks on private yachts in the Maldives isn’t the greenest lifestyle, but somebody’s gotta do it.

    • donald seymour

Nailed it! It is what it is. Let’s move on.

    • James

I’m sure he’ll be banging them on solar powered yachts in the near future.

    • drano66

I can’t speak negatively of his acting skills, he’s one of the best of his generation.

But I can question his personal preferences and motives to endorse a company from a country who dont protect human rights or the environnement.

      Oh the irony!

Why not endorse an american company as Tesla? No…

The big agenda, one step at a time, is to open the doors to Warren Buffet and his chinese friends to import their “eco-friendly“ cars in America.

I hope the amount of money was worth to be so unpatriotic!

      • Big Black Duck

why shouldn’t environmentally progressive companies not be promoting regardless of which nation they use as their base of operations? so you can continue to criticize china? China will become more advanced than the US very soon…. even then ppl in the US will continue to believe in creationism and they are the greatest country…

        • drano66

BYD is phony and a copycat company with a shady track record equal as is country of origin.

They can promote as they wish with western public figures, but we won’t be fooled of their ultimate goal, as to takeover our natural resources and destroying our economy!

  • TheBelltower

That dildo Leo’s holding is probably toxic. He shouldn’t use it.

  • Jim Jones ©

“Brand Ambassador” you mean he sold his time to spruik whatever they want him to say, companies really need to find a new advertising strategy because if they hadn’t noticed the era of the ‘celebrity’ is well and truly over.

  • I’M SURPRISED HE’S AN OSCAR WINNER.

  • Big Black Duck

I like Leo. he is an awesome actor….and appreciate how he shines the spotlight on important issues… unlike the douche bags who criticize him…

    • Beelzaboot teriaksun

If you criticize the douchebags, doesn’t that make you a douchebag ? hehe
