2018 Vs 2017 Ford Mustang: Poll & Photo Comparison

Does anyone find it ironic that more people seem to be upset with the subtly tweaked 2018MY Mustang’s styling than what they did when Ford presented the sixth generation model at the end of 2014?

Or at least that’s the vibe we’re getting from the commentary on our 2018 Mustang stories here on Carscoops as well as on various pony-car forums.

Most of these readers are focusing much of their criticisms and dislikes on the changes made to the front end of the car, and at the same time, either welcoming or being neutral on other design updates, such as the availability of a 12-inch all-digital instrument cluster and the C-shaped LED tri-bar rear lights.

To Ford’s defense, one shouldn’t be absolute with these things when judging exclusively from photos and video footage, as sometimes, design elements look different when viewed in real life.

But for now, that’s all we have to go on, so we’ve prepared the following gallery with the original and facelifted sixth-generation Mustangs side-by-side. Check it out and tell us what you think.

I must say the deep red looks much better than the awful yellow. Maybe I would like it without the fangs.

    • Nordschleife

I definitely agree that the other colors make it look better than that hideous yellow.

  • baofe

Cons: Front fascia looks way to complicated and messy, headlights look way more droopy, vertical straight taillights of the 15-17 model looks like it’ll age alot better than the new complicated curved shape.

Pros: Nice digital instument panel, exhaust upgraded, 10spd but don’t go for that pls

  • Kash

The new headlights give it an 6th gen/pre-facelift 7th gen Charger kinda look to it.

Edit: Wait, i get it now, something fell on the car and pushed the hood/grille down so they just went with it.

  • okb

this looks like an early 2000s concept

  • donald seymour

You know, I’m going to have to see this in person, because it looks like a hot mess right now.

  • Tom

I can’t be the only one who sees Elantra Sport with that new front end.

  • Craig

I’m warming up to it. I like how the bar in the grill is now in line with the bar in the lower grill and the crease in the hood.

  • Mark S

Ill take the 17 Face on a 18 tail.

  • Mr. Crankypants

It’s awesome -and by August 99% of the naysayers will be lined up at showrooms waving checks to be the first to get one.

    • Giuseppe

I agree…it’s always like this!.. I like better than my gt ’15

  • europeon

Digital instrument clusters should never happen.
A car needs analog gauges for speed and engine RPM, it’s a safety issue, and there should be rules and regulations forbidding all-digital clusters. You want to have LCD backgrounds for the clocks and additional information, HUDs and a dash made out completely out of OLEDs, go ahead by all means, but the analog part should be mandatory.
You never see digital only gauges in professional applications, replacing everything with an LCD si a dangerous consumer fad, and the auto industry shouldn’t fall for this.

    • Frostycrowd

Nearly all modern vehicles ‘analog’ gauges are driven by digital signals. These fail all the time… What is the difference? Let’s say it does fail, and the screen goes blank… someone is going to start driving 150mph into a wall because they don’t know how fast they are going?

      • europeon

Yes they are driven by digital signals, but it’s one less link in the chain that can fail. An LCD displaying the information a computer provides is more prone to failure or error than an analog gauge. And I’m not even going into the visibility problems such a display has, both during daylight and night time, because all car manufacturers cheap out and don’t use OLED displays.

        • TrollololNotEuropeanNotAmerica

My instrument cluster failed on me, and it was analog…

          • europeon

All things break. Depends on how often they do that.

  • nauticalone

    Overall i’m liking it!

  • Mr E Fella

not a very good quality photoshop, but i made some fixes to what i think they should have done.
The front has been shortened, grill and lights are raised, the grill is also longer, and the b-pillar is back. all these changes i think give the car a better muscular stance, and a more menacing face when it comes up from behind you.

I made some changes to the rear too but they were to minor to bother posting

    • Matt

Sorry but that grille is too big, and the lights unnessecarily recessed. Looks like a Mustang on GTA, where they have to alter the design to avoid licensing fees.

The Mustang should be instantly recognizable as a Mustang, and that front end is too generic. I like the B-pillar though.

      • Mr E Fella

you can blame ford for the headlights. i only moved them.

      • James Denz

Not bad but that b-pillar makes the quarter window look like a peep hole. The hidden b-pillar is much sleeker and more in line with almost all vintage hardtop Mustangs.

    • strtngfrsh

Not bad but honestly I think they could have left the exterior as is, maybe a few minor changes but the 2015-2017 exterior is by far my fav since the late 60s early 70s. The interior is where it was lacking and looked cheap beneath the brand. They could have given a major interior face lift along with the performance upgrades and called it a day. Would have been the best stang ever. I also think taking away the base V6 was a mistake, I’d much rather have it than the eco-boost 4.

  • BrucieBruce

I like the upgrade. The face lift gives it a lower meaner look. I just like it.

  • Bash

its growing on me tbh, I have to see it I person though..

    • donald seymour

Bash, I hate to admit it, but kinda a little same for me, just a little.

      • Bash

so true, as if growing on by back and its like there is nothing you can do out it! lol.. but really cant help but to see those headlights shape does look like the older charger headlights!

  • thunder bolt

oh yeah, the new Mustang is righteous.

  • WG

This facelifted Mustang does look more aggressive up front compared to the previous model.

  • Knotmyrealname

I quite like the changes. Hell, at least you can tell it’s had a facelift, unlike the 4 series!!

  • benT

front looks like Aston Martin – which Ford owned for a short time………………

  • rover10

People basically hate change. When this all new body was introduced there was universal approval, plus the fact, it was offered to more overseas markets. These styling tweaks are subtle and to my eye and don’t change the overall message, other than improve its road presents. I believe the main issue here is the fact Ford chose to facelift so soon after the initial launch?

  • Shtekeris

The leaks looked bad, but now everything looks more sophisticated and stylish. Pretty coupe.

  • john1168

Were they trying for a Ford GT look on that new front end with those blades on the front air dam? It just doesn’t work with the Mustang. It looks hideous especially with the very narrow opening in the middle and the giant grille opening right above it. The headlights and upper grille and everything else looks great. The interior and mechanical updates are great too. It’s just a shame they ruined it all with the terrible looking front end.

  • Benjamin B.

I actually like the facelift Mustang a lot. It reminds me of the Jaguar XE… Looks very similar. That being said, Ford obviously is listening to criticism and wants the Mustang to be a very nice sport coupe.

  • Tinky-Winky

In my opinion the facelift is definitely an improvement and I might even like the new Mustang now. I just hope that the euro model won’t get the amber reflectors in the headlights and Ford doesn’t change GT 350 bumpers too much. P.S. Please use some other platform for your polls, not everyone has this stupid Twitter account.

    • JohnCarscoop

Point taken. We replaced the Twitter poll with another one that we’re experimenting with.

  • Vassilis

    I think it looks awesome!

  • ErnieB

So it’s a face drop not a face lift… no? I kinda like it!

  • Scott Carmichael

People just need something to bitch about.

  • Jason Miller

Sucks you need a twitter account to vote.

  • nauticalone

I like the new Mustang. Twitter…no!

  • salamOOn

Overcomplicated headlights, front bumper, rear spoiler…. current one is much more sleeker, but still more aggressive.

  • fabri99

It wasn’t amazing before, and it got worse.

  • the Old !

  • KidRed

Looks more like a mid life cycle update.

  • BlackPegasus

Why was an update even necessary? Too subtle to be used as a selling point.

  • Cameron

The new lights look awesome, but just how everything is laid out is terrible. Bet anyone they change it again 2019/20

  • JK

All in all I like the changes except for the new license plate area that now buldges out from the bottom. It looks very “Crap we forgot a place for the rear plate” tacked on and doesn’t seem to flow with anything else.

  • So it did look better before…

  • Matthijs

I actually like the new front bumper. More edgy and modern. I just don’t get why car brands put the headlights so low, it only makes it look heavy and weird. Same as for the BMW 4 series

  • The Truth

They wrecked the backend of the mustang in 2015 looks like shit, looks like a foreign car. Flatten the damn thing out! Dont sweep it back like something you flush down the toilet. hashtag sucks
