Alleged Ford Designer Claims New Bronco Will Be A Rebadged Everest

Ford managed to deliver one of the highlights of the Detroit Auto Show by announcing the return of the Bronco in 2020.

Spoken about in hushed whispers throughout recent years, a new-age Bronco promises to be one of the most eagerly-awaited vehicles in recent memory. However, if a person who claims to be a Ford designer is to be believed, it may not even be worthy of the Bronco badge.

In an unofficial Reddit AMA, a user named FordDesignBurner, who claims to be an official Ford designer working on the new Ranger, said that “It will essentially be a rebadged Everest but there will be differences. It will be a 4 door. I definitely can’t discuss pricing in detail but it will be competitive with the Colorado and cheaper than a similar F-150.”

The crew at Jalopnik asked him to verify his affiliation with Ford, to which he replied:

“I’ve provided that proof (pic of my ID) of my working at Ford to the moderators of this sub. Earlier this morning, someone else commented on the thread saying “I call BS” and I’m naturally nervous over this. I also have to tell you that this AMA is not in any way sanctioned by management, I am doing this because I am a Ranger owner. That is why there are certain details (drivetrain combinations, price points) that I won’t give more than a vague answer on – I know what direction it’s heading, but those are details that, if leaked, would start a witch hunt.”

It has been widely reported that the new Bronco would be based around the Everest, but if FordDesignBurner  is correct in saying that it will just wear a different badge, it may not be the beast we’re all waiting for. But that’s a big if. With that being said, the alleged designer clearly isn’t telling the full story on the 2020 Bronco leaving us with some hope.

In a different answer, FordDesignBurner said that the new Bronco is being benchmarked against the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited and that it will have similar off-road capabilities to the new Ford Ranger.

No other important details were divulged about the new Bronco and unfortunately, we still have a few years to see it in the flesh. Here’s hoping it’s worth the wait.

if its true, then why wait to 2020?

    • Eythan Aldrich

it may be false that it would be a rebadged everest…..we will wait for the “OFFICIAL” one

    • nastinupe

Regulatory submissions, testing, retooling factories, acquiring suppliers, logistical preparations, etc. If it’s a 2020 then it would most likely be be released around September of 2019, meaning that the prototype will probably be presented in 2018 at the Detroit Auto Show… and it’s already 2017 so there you go.

    • Kash

Because Ford promised to produce the Bronco in America, currently the Everest is not made in America so they need to setup a factory to build it here before showcasing it.

    • HUBEMX

Because he is talking about the next generation Everest.

    • Matt

Because it would be based on the 2019 Everest, which in turn would be based on the new Ranger, which is still in development by Ford Australia.

    • Six Thousand Times

It’ll be the next generation Ranger/Everest. More US-friendly styling and more aluminium.

    • Miknik

Most likely it will be a rebadeged “next generation” Everest, as making the current model US Ready might not pay off anymore, I suspect

  • ediotsavant

Who cares? Maybe the old folks hibernating in the countryside.

  • Kash

I would laugh so hard if they did that.

  • U8INIT

WTF is a Everest yall?! I want the red one in the picture…

  • Ray

And yet you’re STILL using that photoshopped fan-fiction instead of a picture of the actual vehicle in the title.

    • U8INIT

Right…getting me all excited and $hit…

  • seriously

It makes sense they announced them both at the same time, and the everest is a Ranger based SUV; unless the US is getting a new version of the Ranger doesn’t seem to make much sense to create a vehicle to go after the Wrangler specifically no other automaker has had success in doing so previously. Not sure what the big deal is about it being an everest especially since it looks exactly like a 4 door wagon version of the ranger.

  • Jerry Hightower

Ford is abandoning a large contingency of us who want a smaller truck like the former Ranger. But no, they have to build a midsized Ranger and Bronco and charge outrageous prices.

  • Maricaibo

When I first glimpsed the headline I thought it said a “…Rehashed Everest”

  • Raf

    A rebadged Everest for a Bronco….stupid.

    • Tumbi Mtika

Needs a little tooling but you’re on the right track. Is it called Blazer?

  • Tumbi Mtika

That would be disappointing, but I have faith in Ford.

  • Alexander Carabitses

Complete bullshit. Autoline Detroit interviewed the head of global product development at Ford, Raj Naire (probably butchered his name) on Monday and he was asked if it would be a rebadged Everest and he said it would not because the Everest is more of an Explorer like vehicle despite being body on frame. I believe he did say that the platform would be the same.

  • Bash

a re-badged Everest for a 4 door bronco, I really hope they are just testing the water here… because this is just plain stupid… this kind of things you would expect from a management or whoever in decision maker in ford that doesn’t know the heritage of the Bronco.. I mean bare minimum that its is to be based on the F150, even thought I prefer a shortened version of the current expedition to start with, plus put that 5.0 V8 they have in the mustang, and please please I want my bronco to be 2-door.. the 4-door can still be an extra option…
The bronco is not just a label or badges you put on any SUV.. and they gonna ruin it like that, I’d rather wish it never sees the day light!

This guy is risking his job by leaking this information why, exactly?
