BMW Chief Designer Karim Habib Reportedly Leaving German Automaker

According to a report fresh out of Germany, BMW’s chief designer Karim Habib is leaving the German automaker.

Although no official confirmation has been made, Auto Motor und Sport suggests that Habib has quit his position with BMW and is moving to an undisclosed carmaker.

Since taking up the helm of BMW’s chief designer in 2012, Habib has been instrumental in the exterior and interior designs of all of the company’s models under the leadership of BMW Group Design chief Adrian van Hoonydonk. Habib has also worked alongside Benoit Jacob and Anders Warming during his time at BMW.

Given his high-ranking position, Habib’s departure is certainly a loss for the brand and finding his successor will be a priority.

Definitely not upset by this though current BMWs are very attractive even a car nut (me) has trouble distinguishing new models, let alone facelifts. Im talking about you refreshed 4 series!

    • Nordschleife

I am with you. Maybe it was needed to inject some new style unto the brand. Unless that is what Karim was trying to do and Adrian kept blocking him.

    • Kaisuke971

He didn’t design the 4 Series.

      • Marshall Boyce

Not saying he did but as cheif designer he most certainly had input in the design, if not the final approval.

        • Ary Wisesa

But still Adrian will have the final words for every design proposal in BMW Group.

  • lapirk

It’s Hooydonk not Hoonydonk lol although I personally read the man’s name as honkeydonkey.

Habib definitely made the cars look nicer than bangle. Won’t be surprised if he was hired by Chinese manufacturers Time for young talent to bring a fresh futufe take on the whole range. Bring it

    • iKaizen

Not sure if it is this guy, but I remember reading an article about a year ago that Hyundai was getting a BMW designer, like how Kia got an Audi designer.

    • alexxx

bmw was number 1 in bangles era and now….is not…so go figure…

  • fabri99

Not a great loss, to be honest.

  • pcurve

My favorite designs in the last 20 years.

    5 series F10 – Jacek Fröhlich
    E89 Z4 – Juliane Blasi
    New X1 – Calvin Luk
    E70 x5

They should just promote these guys, if anybody is still left.

  • Gustavo Adriano

It took a long time to like the new 3 Series design, when it appeared at the first time, but in the end it’s my favorite sedan of the segment, stylish speaking. However, cars like the GT’s one for example make me hate the brand because they are very strange (I know, you folks like them because they are roomy, still they are weird cars). I hope the next Chief Designer would be a guy like Chris Bangle, it’s 5 Series was the best of BMW line up until nowadays, a Sedan that is still modern for our decade.
Finally I hope that the next brand that Karim Habib will work for make nice cars!

    • Ary Wisesa

I like BMW 3 Series/5 Series GT so much. The only thing that doesn’t look very good on those cars are only their rear lights. But the concept of BMW GT is absolutely brilliant.

      • MultiKdizzle

A moment of silence for the one guy that likes the BMW GT models.

        • Ary Wisesa

A moment of silence for someone who can’t respect difference and thinks his taste is above everyone else.

    • alexxx

agreed,Bangles 5 series was just perfect

  • klowik

You can’t really let free to do what you want in BMW, all the BMW models have to look the similar. There’s not much decision for any BMW designer to create new styling unless you are the top.

  • Tumbi Mtika

    Not gonna miss you, buddy.

  • Vassilis

Maybe this is a good thing.

  • enthusia

i might be the only one who thinks this, but i actually like and appreciate the Chris Bangle era of BMW. i thought they were so distinctive and different. these F generation BMWs are so boring.
    so farewell!

    • alexxx

not the only one….i also like the bangle era cars…they had much much character…

  • Six_Tymes

wow, he has been making bmw’s slowly look better again. with him gone they will go back to looking ugly

  • It’s understandable, the man got bored… there’s only so much you can do with the kidney grille.

I think that after this BMW will go once more in a “Bangle route”: they did a safe one, now some new lines… wherever they may lead.
