Kia Niro Hybrid Makes Television Debut With Two Spots

Kia has teamed up with actress Melissa McCarthy to promote their first dedicated hybrid vehicle – the Niro.

Narrated by the Emmy award winner, the two TV spots, christened ‘Needs & Wants’ and ‘Many Names’, are to be broadcasted as part of a multi-channel marketing campaign, which will expand in the coming weeks and culminate with an original 60-second footage set to air during Super Bowl LI.

The two videos, which were already released by Kia online, were created by David&Goliath, the automaker’s advertising agency, and are said to highlight the SUV’s “no-compromise combination of driving enjoyment, eye-catching design, functional utility, and hybrid efficiency”.

We’ve got a fantastic story to tell about the Niro’s uniquely alluring yet practical package, and the incredibly talented Melissa McCarthy is the perfect partner to help us do it“, said Kia Motors America’s CEO and EVP, Michael Sprague.

The 2017 Kia Niro Hybrid, which nabbed a Guinness world record for achieving the lowest fuel consumption by a hybrid vehicle while driving from coast-to-coast, will arrive at retailers across the US soon. It uses a 1.6-liter petrol engine, with 103 HP, and a 43 HP electric motor, for a combined 146 HP and 195 lb-ft (264 Nm) of torque.

  • I do not think you can combine gas motor and electric motor HPs to get total HP…

    • Kash

They call it “total system HP” and add a nice little disclaimer that reads like “all power may not be available at one time” and it’s the same way Tesla got away with saying the Model S P90D had like 700hp and then people were dyno’ing them only at like 550hp or something.

In the system of the Niro it’s not wrong technically, as the engines are actually on one shaft entering the DSG, unlike in the planetary concept of the Prius (which engineering wise, is not really a CVT, just behaves like one) The Prius (and all so called CVT systems)system doesn’t use both engines at full power at the same time, but always optimizes for the engines lowest consumption combinations, so they claim a maximum total output. Truth is however also that the Kia can only deliver these horsepower as long as there is juice in the battery, which means under heavy load for a rather short period. Once drained, your stuck with 105hp with bad luck….

The Niro is already sold in Europe. Reviews there been quite positive, especially when compared to the Prius. The specs for both are close. It’s slightly smaller than the Soul and certainly much better looking than the Prius. The Prius is one butt ugly car. The Niro looks respectable enough and will have Kia’s long warranty so expect it should sell well.

As bad as the Prius looks I am sooo glad this thing isn’t modeled after the Soul. I think the Soul is the ugliest modern car on the road.
