There Can Only Be One Winner In This Luxury Family SUV Test

Given that the luxury family SUV segment is quite large and extremely competitive, deciding on one overall winner is very difficult and it takes more than just a simple test drive.

The crew over at CarAdvice decided to take an assortment of premium models, including the BMW X5, Range Rover Sport, Mercedes-Benz GLE, Volvo XC90, Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne, Lexus RX and Jaguar F-Pace, to see which one came out on top.

They evaluated their functionality, practicality, fuel consumption, equipment levels, on-road dynamics and  off-road prowess. The only issue we could raise is that of the presence of the F-Pace, which is more compact than family-sized.

So which one do you reckon came out on top?

We won’t spoil the result for you, but we can tell you that the overall winner impressed everyone not by the fact that it did everything right, but simply by “doing nothing wrong” and proving competent during all tests.

Deep down it sort of hurts to never see an infiniti QX in most of these comparisons… I think mine is pretty luxurious just as much or if not more than the lexus.

    • RS6 Performance Wagon Lover

If you mean the QX80, it’s in class above, in terms of size.

    • Grumpy

Infinit is still working towards being a luxury brand. For the most part, their line up is considered in the premium class much like Acura. The Q50, Q60 are a start, but they have some distance to go. Especially with the QX60, similar to how Lexus did with the ES, is a standard car with a big more glamour. Lexus can get away with it, because they already have cars in the 3 major segments (IS, GS, LS), but infiniti doesn’t have many crossovers that are unique enough to infiniti.
And no, the QX60 isn’t anywhere as nice as the RX.

      • KenjiK

BMW, Mercedes and Audi are also considered premium.

        • Grumpy

You wouldn’t compare a Benz to an Acura…would you?

          • Tumbi Mtika

You wouldn’t compare a Honda to an Infiniti, would you?

          • Grumpy

You wouldn’t compare a Honda to an (Nissan), would you?… you would. That’s exactly what the QX60 is.

          • Tumbi Mtika

Is the FX a Nissan though?

      • Jay

QX70 has had the same design for almost 7 years but they have all the same luxury, the QX80 can be on the list but this is more for small suv/crossovers.. what makes these make the cut is what I’m not getting. Thats all. I still think the QX60 should’ve been included too.

        • Grumpy

Refinement. The Nissan pathfinder shows in the QX60. In order to be on this list, you need a well sorted powertrain. I don’t see any Luxury car in this group that has a CVT on nonhybrids. The interior shares too many parts with its non premium twin. The vents, steering wheel, and overall design is slightly tweaked enough to separate the two. Think of the QX60 like a top trim Pathfinder. Nothing wrong with that;.It’s a good car, but because the price crossed over 40k, infiniti/nissan decided to market it within infiniti. When infiniti creates a new model that is genuine to infiniti in all its right (like the Q50, Q60), it will become a true competitor in this list.

*Cough* *Cough* QX70 *Cough* *Cough* QX50 *Cough*

        Something in my throat…

    • Tumbi Mtika

      I love the QX70.

      • Grumpy

QX70 is nice. Looking forward to the next gen with the new design language.

  • Craig

    Is there no ‘Honda MDX’?

    • RS6 Performance Wagon Lover

      Not in Australia (any more)………

      • Craig

        That’s too bad. It’s a BIG seller in N.A.

        • RS6 Performance Wagon Lover

That’s probably why they ended RHD production.

  • Craig

The Audi’s got the bling? It looks like a modern day Checker Marathon.

  • 31/12/2999

It’s not all about design, matters performance, security, technology.

  • salamOOn

    rx350 0-60 in 9.2sec? thats really slow…. 🙁

and q7? missing spare wheel is a big thing to me….

    • badcyclist

Lack of spare + mediocre Bose upgrade + outrageously expensive B&O option + $10K more expensive than a comparably equipped XC90 = Nice car, but not for us.

There are some significant size differences among these cars. As one reviewer said, it is kind of a “motley crew.”
