Consumer Reports Says FCA Builds 4 Of The Worst 10 Vehicles Of 2017

Alongside naming its best vehicles currently on sale, Consumer Reports has announced the lowest-rated vehicles in each of its 10 categories and it isn’t good news for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.

The Fiat 500L was named the worst Compact Car after a number of tests and factoring in reliability, customer satisfaction and safety. FCA then continued with another vehicle to the list in the form of the now-defunct Chrysler 200, named the worst Midsized Sedan.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, FCA is also responsible for the lowest-rated Family SUV in the form of the Dodge Journey and the poorest Midsized Luxury Sedan with the Maserati Ghibli.

Elsewhere, Mitsubishi fared rather poorly with the Mirage and i-MiEV being named the lowest-rated Subcompact and Electric Car respectively with both fiercely criticized for their poor ride, handling and lackluster interiors.

In terms of Small Pickups, the Toyota Tacoma came home as the lowest-rated particularly due to its poor reliability and low customer satisfaction. A surprising inclusion in the list for the Luxury Sedan segment is the Mercedes-Benz CLA. Although the brand is generally considered rather highly, CR says the CLA is unreliable and has an unrefined ride.

In terms of Compact Luxury SUVs, the Land Rover Discovery Sport came last in testing while the Cadillac Escalade was named as the worst Large SUV.

Toyota Tacoma being poor reliability? I’m surprised though!

    • Chris Zeidler

It’s not that they aren’t reliable, but some are complaining about the transmission wanting to shift sooner and lean towards fuel economy. All they have to do is press the ECT power button and it cancels it, just like a Dodge can cancel the cylinder deactivation. Problem is most sales people aren’t telling the customer that and it’s then filed as a complaint.

      • AZCornhusker*

So, in other words, Toyota did exactly what Ford did with their Fiesta and Focus and got the same results. Trying to save on fuel at the expense of a wonky transmission with bad shift sequencing is not entirely a smart move, it turns out.

        • Benjamin B.

The Fiesta and Focus automatic models use a 6 speed dual clutch, which sometimes can feel weird when suddenly slowing down and then quickly speeding up. Remember there are two manual transmissions inside the gearbox.

      • tony

Isn’t that’s what the 200 owners was complaining about? Are Your making excuses for the tacoma?

        • nick barnes

my 200 with 18k just started to act up with shifting hard wish they just keep maybe a 5 or 6 speed this 9 speed tranny sucks just to even get in 9th gear have to do 80 mph

          • Benjamin B.

Four cylinder?? My opinion is 9 gears is too many for the 2.4L Tigershark.

          • nick barnes

Ya the 2.4 and stuck in 2nd gear dam mine going in to get reprogram for the tranny problems guess there been a few updates

          • Benjamin B.

At least you’re not stuck in second gear

        • Benjamin B.

Problem with the 200 (four cylinder model) is it didn’t have anough power (Jeremy Clarkson agrees). The V6 higher spec trims drive better, although many people get the terrible rental car spec. The ZF 9 speed isn’t a bad transaxle. FCA’s wacky gear shifter and its decision not to include software that automatically puts transmission in park and/or deploys parking brake aside. Biggest issue is it’s attached to an engine that doesn’t need 9 gears. Most people won’t even use top gear.

      • Benjamin B.

modern Ford automatics have a Sport gearing mode that holds gears longer… which actually helps in snow.

      • RDS Alphard

So, driver(s) who too lazy to figure out how car works, complaint to Consumer Reports, and so Tacoma get bad score? XD

    • tony

@RDS Alphard most consumers buy auto’s based on perception.

    • badcyclist

Tacomas are pretty much bullet-proof. I don’t know about the re-designed model, and they could be a different story. But my extended family has three 2d generation Tacomas (one 2005, two 2007s), all with over 100,000 miles on them, and none of them have even caught a cold.

And if you think they are over-priced, you’re misinformed. They hold their value better than any truck on the market… by far.

      • Benjamin B.

CR counts things like laggy infotainment screens against reliability scores.

      • Benjamin B.

The Fast LaneTruck guys have been doing a lot with Nissan trucks lately.

    • Benjamin B.

CR counts issues with the infotainment screen as reliability issues. Early BMW systems causes BMW ratings to be low. My Ford’s score was knocked down because of the Sync 2/My Ford Touch system. It’s not that great. But cars nowadays are generally much more reliable than cars just twenty years ago. But modern cars are held to higher standards now.

      • RDS Alphard

I haven’t use any brand new infotainment screen on Toyota yet, maybe they are really rubbish when used.

  • Belthronding Tinuviel

FİAT must take an action asap to avoid dissatistaction.
otherwise i am pretty sure that they will be worse than that.
lancia is almost dead, alfa trying to survive, maserati has been delaying new product launches and fiat is dying because of poor quality and extremely low end brand perception.

Who buys a car with a Ferrari derived engine and then complains about mpg’s?

    • Matt

      • Tumbi Mtika

Looks like like the Giulia QV will suffer.

        • why?

        • Miknik

It is an all new platform, with major components (engines) new as well, and a lot of components done by rather promising suppliers, like the famous ZF 8 speed auto. SO we can’t automatically assume it will be as bad as most (often much older) designs, that are not related technically.

        • Benjamin B.

I really like it. The new 3 series is too technical.

      • dumblikeyou2

Well, when you’re Chrysler, I mean, Maserati is getting the same MPG’s as the large SUV that most American’s are driving and not complaining about, there is a call for question as to WTF why not doesn’t it have better?

    • Michael Smith

The Maserati Ghibli doesn’t have a Ferrari derived engine it’s basic architecture is based off the Pentastar ! The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio has the Ferrari derived engine.

      • kachuks

I was thinking the same thing. Couldn’t remember whether the Ghibli or QP has Ferrari engine.

        • Miknik

V8 versions are Ferrari derived, and the V6 – though with relations to the Pentastar V6 – has also been heavily modified in Maranello.

    • dumblikeyou2

That’s a fucking lame ass excuse in the year twenty seventeen.

  • justin wunder

I own A 2016 Chrysler 200 S its the best out there hands down! Best engine and transmission and the interior is the best !

    • tony

justin wunder there just not cool. Its a Chrysler.

      • justin wunder

Ha ha you’re right they are HOT

    • Stigasawuswrecks

Please put down the crack pipe.

    • nick barnes

i like mine to just wish they keep the 5 speed the 9 speed pointless

      • justin wunder

mines fast as hell and my friend that has owned god awful German Japanese and Korean cars . said that my car is the best car he has ever driven and he is trading in his BMW as soon as possible!

  • Michael_66589

I see somebody dont like Cadillac Escalade which is pretty reliable truck.

  • Craig

I think lists like this are misleading. And that’s what I don’t like about Consumer Reports. A low-rating does NOT always mean ‘unreliable’. But I bet most people think it does.

  • Six_Tymes

I agree with the tacoma opinion/review. my brother owned two. both were exactly as they describe and over priced.

  • bd

The MB CLA being included is not a surprise – it has widely been lambasted by the auto press for its flinty ride and cheap interior.

  • psiqtas

The 500L, Ghibli and 200 are actually Italian engineering designs to be precise,,, As matter of fact if F.I.A.T. keeps that design quality further they will sink the whole Chrysler down!

  • Bob

Carscoops, did FCA eat your porridge or something?

  • TheHake

It seems that the Disco Sport is becoming the new Freelander I. Plagued with reliability problems. Very disappointing that LR/Jag didn’t learn from their mistakes.
