KBB Puts Together Midsize Luxury SUV Comparison Test

If you’re in the market for a brand new midsize luxury SUV and are only considering models from Volvo, Audi, Land Rover, Acura or Infiniti, this video review could help you out.

Unfortunately for those expecting direction regarding their decision, this review from Kelley Blue Book doesn’t feature a winner, as stated in the video’s description.

Instead, the team chose to focus on the comparison and not the competition, as they put it, which means you’ll need to make up your own mind at the end of this review.

Still, if we’re to count all the accolades, it feels as though the 2017 Volvo XC90 was favored over the likes of Infiniti’s QX60, Acura’s MDX and even Audi’s Q7. The Range Rover Sport was a bit harder to grade, but as expected, there weren’t many negatives pointed its way.

As for the best value-for-money model, in some ways, it might actually be the Acura, although you’d be giving up on some of the posh-ness found in most of its rivals.

Only in America would these ever be called “mid sized”…lol

    • Matthijs

lol indeed.. but even in the US a mid sized sedan is like a Sonata, so a mid sized SUV would be the Santa Fe, or S60 vs XC60. These luxury SUV’s are more in the high mid sized class based on bigger cars.

it’s because the luxury-midsize-crossover market here is more of a grey area for anything bigger than a compact crossover and should really be sorted more by price and number of available rows, especially as brands do like BMW and scale the X5 back down the to make room for the X7 after pushing it up and up every year.

Step down to non-luxury brands and you don’t have this problem.

      They’re not SUVs either.

Its gonna be the Volvo for me..

Volvo for me 2! Just classy!

Too bad they didn’t include the MDX Sport Hybrid. For a $1,500 premium over the equivalent gasser MDX, the increase in performance and efficiency makes it a no-brainer for those shopping the upper trim levels. Plus, no crappy ZF 9-speed. I sampled one myself last weekend, and it was so good it pushed the CX-9, XC90 and V90 CC completely off my list. I just wish the infotainment system weren’t so clunky and the styling weren’t so dowdy.

The Sport Hybrid looks nice, but the package adds almost $8k on Acura’s website.

      • Rocket

For the equivalent trim it’s $1,500. An Advance trim Sport Hybrid is $51,960 vs $50460 for the Advance trim gasser. (Unfortunately, the Advance trim is the least expensive model.) Of course that’s at MSRP. Buyers might not have much negotiating leverage on the hybrid.

For some odd reason, I am liking the Infiniti QX60 and Acura MDX a lot more with the exception of the Volvo XC90. I can live with a vehicle being less prestige limited to a certain few while being in total comfort with the likes of the Acura MDX and Infiniti QX60. I know the aforementioned are prevalent variants of a Honda Pilot and Nissan Pathfinder but Honda and Nissan have both done an excellent job at exceeding my expectation with great products and if I had to choose I might will choose an Acura MDX because of its traditional transmission and amenities it have over the CVT equipped QX60.
