LS3-Swapped Porsche 911 GT3 With 525 HP Hits Craigslist

Thanks to its use of the stunning flat-six cylinder Mezger engine, the 997-generation Porsche 911 GT3 is remembered very fondly by Porsche purists and general car enthusiasts alike.

Despite its pedigree, a GT3 owner in the U.S. has done the unthinkable and swapped out that engine in favour of a 6.2-liter Chevrolet LS3 V8. The finished product is now up for sale on Craigslist.

The seller asserts that the C6 Corvette engine delivers a total of 525 hp and 485 lb-ft of torque when shoehorned into the rear of the iconic German sports car. Alongside the V8 is said to be an OEM 6-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. Other modifications include the removal of the carbon ceramic brakes in favor of cheaper steel units as well as the implementation of a digital gauge cluster.

In this listing, it is reported that the V8 has only been fitted for 650 miles and is still being broken in. The air conditioning, ABS and stability control are all said to function normally as well.

With an asking price of $95,000, we can’t imagine a Porsche purist wanting to get anywhere near the car, but for those that believe there’s no replacement for displacement, this offer could be too good to refuse.

Fantastic! This is what should happen to all 911’s; 1999 thru 2008.

    • Matt

And for every conversion a Corvette is taken off the road. Seems fair.

You do know that they sell crate engines?

        • Matt

Sure do. My point was if you’re advocating for the mass bastardization of Porsche 911s, then you deserve to lose a few beloved Corvettes.

            Oh well…now I’m genuinely frighten.

OK, I’m all for V8 swaps, but this, I just don’t have the right words for it. It’s just plain wrong.

At least if you’re swapping, find a base one or something.

  • Merc1

The 996 was a bad enough car already and now you’ve taken the one variant worth remembering and turned it into a POS. Wrong.

      This is a 997.

Putting a HP badge on the rear is so lame.

Until you step on the gas…

      • Matt

Yeah I forgot a HP badge adds 10bhp.

Pretty sure I read somewhere this idea came about because the original engine blew up. But this might not be that car.

    • eb110americana

I was going to say, that seems likely, given the original mill. If you really wanted an LS3 911, why not start with a Carrera? If the engine was already toast, then this makes a lot more sense.

    • Kash

I think this is that car actually, the pictures look somewhat similar.

If you swapped the flat 6 with LS3 because the original went bust I don’t mind. But replacing a perfectly fine 3.6-litre Mezger flat 6 on a GT3 with LS3? Really?

That’s like going on a nice Italian restaurant, ordering a pasta carbonara but they replaced the Parmigiano with 2 pounds of Monterey Jack.

Why “respect” is even in their dictionnary again ?

  • SteersUright

I love a V8 conversion 911, but they should be cheaper, not more expensive. The V8 has awesome power but none of the soul of a high rpm flat 6. Plus they’re way cheaper than a flat 6 as well, $8k vs $20k or thereabouts. I’d like to pick up a 997 conversion car for about $25k.

  • Vassilis

Some people really have no respect for their cars. This is sacrilege.

  • So Isaidtogod

How to make a crap car from two.

  • Bob White

The fact that this car is put up for sale right after the the conversion can be indicative that this isn’t a happy marriage.
I’m actively involved in this type of work, and I can tell you that most significant modifications result in issues ranging from minor to very significant.

  • An Existing Person

I’m at a loss for words as to why this even happened. If the Mezger engine blew up, it might be acceptable, but to replace a working Mezger engine is sacrilege. What a shame.

    • willhaven

Considering a list price of only $95k, it’s safe to assume that the original engine grenaded itself or this gentleman would be able to sit on the car for a few more months and collect an extra $15k!
