Michelle Rodriguez Threatens To Quit Fast & Furious Over Sexism

The Fate of the Furious is getting its digital release and Michelle Rodriguez grabbed the opportunity to issue a warning: if the producers won’t start showing women more love, she may have to quit.

On her official Instagram profile Rodriguez expressed her feelings on the franchise, threatening to leave Fast and Furious over sexism.

The movie franchise has well established itself as being one of Hollywood’s most masculine series, despite having powerful female characters starring on every installment. In the Fast and Furious universe, women are also getting way less screen time than their male counterparts do.

“I hope they decide to show some love to the women of the franchise on the next one. Or I just might have to say goodbye to a loved franchise,” the actress wrote on her Instagram post.

It’s not the first time Rodriguez has expressed her concern about the macho vibe of the franchise, saying in an interview with Entertainment Weekly:

“On day one, I [changed] the character from being something that I could not do in front of millions of people into a character that I’m actually proud of, but at the end of the day, what message are we sending out there for women? It does weigh heavy on my head — especially in the male-dominated environment that I work in.”

H/T To Fusion!

F8 is out digitally today, I hope they decide to show some love to the women of the franchise on the next one. Or I just might have to say goodbye to a loved franchise. It’s been a good ride & Im grateful for the opportunity the fans & studio have provided over the years… One Love 🤘🏼❤️🤗🙏🦄✨🌍🙊🤔

  • I’mCallingYouOut

Oh yeah, this comment section should be… enlightening.

  • Bob

I think she should quit. I think they should all quit and give the franchise a rest already.

    • PB

I was thinking they should just punt her from the whole thing if she feels so triggered, but your answer is ultimately the better one.

  • IFDU

Hilarious that she points out male dominance and sexism in this franchise but yet has an issue with race and male/female sexed characters with non-real superheroes. I would take her seriously if race within FAKE characters wasn’t a big deal to her…..the irony….

  • kachuks

How many of these has she done?

    • Jay

She’s only done 8 so who cares..

Im kidding too but tbh I didn’t even notice she didn’t get much screen time til I read this article…

      • Tumbi Mtika

        Actually 4.

        • Jay

True that.. I forgot about the time and places changes that took place..

  • Nathan Daniel Stroud

What good are strong female characters when the actresses who portray them prove how fragile and high-maintenance they truly are as soon as they leave the set?

  • a_race_tothebottom

Has she ever been in anything else that anyone cared about? I don’t even care about FF, but she appears to be looking a gift horse squarely in the mouth.

  • RDS Alphard

Alright then, go ahead & quit.

  • WMangoz

Michelle is right, she should be replaced with an Asian female for a change, Asian chic doesn’t talk much.
Beside that, there’s not enough diversity in this movie, let’s see, there are 1 black woman, 2 black guys, 1 half black half Samoan, and 1 white guy.
Asian guy, hot Israeli, and 1 white guy are all dead. If this movie lacks of anything, it’s diversity.

  • BlackPegasus

As much as I love cars, I never watched one single Fast n Furious movie. I can’t stand the actors involved nor the stupidity of the franchise. As for her whining about sexism, she needs a reality check! That franchise is all about machismo. Teenage girls aren’t flocking to see these films so maybe Rodriguez should look for another job if she’s unhappy with screen time.

My friends love the series but I just refuse to watch 😖

    • Obsequious Lickspittle

Same here, never seen one. And don’t get me started on F1.

    • MarketAndChurch

lol it’s a matter of principle for me too, the most I’ve seen are the trailers on carscoops.

    • Six Thousand Times

I’ve caught some of the earlier ones on satellite. You’re not missing out.

    • Marty

      Sexism in Fast n Furious?
What’s next, someone commenting that there are many space ships in Star Wars?

  • enthusia

quit? you mean they are going to keep making them? the last installment in the franchise i saw was tokyo drift, but i thought the series would have ended when paul walker died, or at the very least ended with this recent one. she should leave while she still has her dignity or whats left of it.

    • Zandit75

There’s at least another 2 planned.

      • kachuks

Running out of ideas and places to film. For that last one they should film on the moon. That’s where they’ll run into Machete in Space.

  • TheBelltower

Darlin’, just go. It’s not about you. F&F is just a bromance movie for dudes.

  • TotallyDisqusted

The FnF series is already one of the most racially diverse casts and I think they’ve done a good job of including women in many areas of the film (geek, tuner, bad guy, agent, etc….).

  • BarryFastCars

Wait a minute. Should she not be grateful to be in the franchise at all. Her character was killed off like 4 installments ago. Since the writers can’t seem to be original they brought her back from the dead. She would not have been in the last 3 movies were it not for the sexist producers. Maybe its just me, but I certainly do not get a kick out of watching girls beat each others asses like The Rock and Vin. Suppose I am sexist too.

  • xDRAN0x

    What? aren’t they done ?

    • fabri99

      My reaction exactly.

  • Dennis James

I’m so tired of this cliche I hear all the time: “Why don’t they end the franchise”. Well, they don’t end it for a reason: it’s a great series if you take it for what it is and don’t try to split hairs and have the least bit of sense of humor. The picture, the stunts, the novelties, the entertainment that they bring in every movie far outweight any complaints regarding all kinds of stupid reasons (most complaints about it are done just because it’s trendy to not like it, not because any real reasons). Thankfully most people “get it” and the new financial record set by the movie speaks for itself.

  • Xandao

“..what message are we sending out there for women?”

and what message are the men or whole film sending to the world? hahaha so stupid

  • badcyclist

According to Google translate, Hollywood to English:

Give women more love = Give me more money

    • Astonman

just found out how much Gal Gadot got for Wonder Woman – $300K – sheesh!!!!

      • donald seymour

        For real? Dang.

        • Astonman

When they interviewed the director Patti Jenkins in the LA Times, they asked her if she gotten a big payday yet. And she said no – which at the time I thought was odd since she is directing a tent pole movie. So when I read about Gal, it made sense. They’re going to make it back in kind on the sequel – i hope…

          • donald seymour

I hope they make it back in sales.

  • Tumbi Mtika

Yeaaahhh-I’m gonna leave before things get out of hand here…

  • Dmitry Zelinskiy

    Тупая дура!

  • Blanka Li

Name another current Michelle project . . . . (hears crickets)

  • Shobin Drogan

She straight up looks and acts like a dude in all the movies she’s in and she’s worried about sexism?

  • Blade t

She should just be happy for the work and the big paychecks. I’m sure many other actresses would kill for a spot in one of those movies.
How can you complain about the role of women in a franchise like fast and the furious . It’s not a chick flick ….this is crazy. What other roles does she even have lately anyway ?
