The latest all-electric versions of the Smart range are now launched in the UK, with first customer deliveries starting this July.

Prices start from £16,420 for the Fortwo model, while the Forfour will set you back at least £16,915. Finally the Fortwo Cabriolet is the most expensive of the three, starting from £18,650. All prices include an OLEV grant of £4,500.

The internal combustion engine has been replaced by an 81hp electric motor that continues to power the rear wheels via a single-speed gearbox. Top speed is limited to 81mph while the driving range is rated up to 100 miles. 0-62mph (100km/h) comes in 11.5 seconds.

Smart also fits every model with a standard 7kW on-board charger which can juice up the battery in its full capacity in 2.5 hours using a 16 A charger or six hours via a standard household socket.

Each electric Smart comes with a lot of features as standard, including heated front seats, cruise control, leather interior, rear parking sensors, an infotainment system with navigation, 15-inch alloys and an acoustic ambient sound generator.

That last bit creates an artificial engine sound when the car is moving at low speeds to let pedestrians be aware of its presence. Smart also offers the ‘electric drive design package’ as a £595 option, which adds a tridion cell and mirror caps finished in electric green, body panels in either black or white, 16-inch alloys and ‘ED’ grey decals.
