Nissan Expands Nismo Lineup, Makes Rogue Look Quicker [w/Video]

With reports coming in about Nissan wanting to double the number of Nismo-branded cars within the next five years, it was only a matter of time before something new was on the horizon.

Unfortunately, what you’re seeing here is just a styling package from Nismo, designed to fit the Nissan Rogue, or X-Trail as people know it in Europe and Japan.

Since this is a Japanese launch, the car is dubbed the X-Trail 20X Hybrid with the Nismo Performance Package, which in this case adds new bumpers, side skirts and a large rear diffuser with red and black accents circling the car.

It’s also got large two-tone wheels, dual exhaust tips, chrome door handles and a blacked out V-motion grille, as seen in these images courtesy of brog.tomorrow01.

Inside, the Nismo Performance Package doesn’t exactly make the X-Trail’s cabin as sporty as one would expect from a true Nismo-tuned Nissan. While it’s missing the sports seats, the Alcantara or sporty pedal set, it does have a flat-bottom steering wheel, although to be fair, that comes with the 2017 upgrade.

    Poor Nismo.

Shame there’s no extra performance, but I do love the current Nismo treatments. The white, black and red looks great!

It really is unfortunate, the storied NISMO performance arm of Nissan is now being diluted to nothing more than a sad, almost mass-market average-Joe, tape-stripe package.

If Nissan was serious about revisiting the sporting aspect of their DNA, NISMO would be kept to/applied to select vehicles like the Sentra (current generation design is hideous and laughable) the Altima (current generation is also laughable with its ridiculous FWD-Screaming front end overhang), the Maxima (same design comments as the Altima – it is also just too damn huge) the 370z and whatever replaces this. With the Altima and Maxima, spend a bit in manufacturing, make them AWD for NISMO, possibly, and keep a manual trans version. Murano is AWD and utilizes the same platform – as those vehicles, a heavily revised Renault-based “D” I believe. For those taking notes, the first-gen Mazda 6 saw the Mazdaspeed6 with AWD – exclusive to the Mazdaspeed 6, regular family-guy versions did not have it.

Although the target is slightly different, look at what Honda has been doing for generations with it’s Civic Si. And now, the Type R; Mustang GT350/350R, and a few others in the “enthusiast-trimmed” model category for each respective manufacturer – Serious performance enthusiasts who value self-shifting are the only ones who can drive these cars, as they are offered in Manual only. Spec-sheet 0-60 reciters and 1/4 mile chasing sheeps-of-the-herd need not apply.

In addition, it’s also probably too late because this aspect of the market is always tricky for profit, but NISMO applied to a sub-priced 370z RWD model to compete with BRZ/FRS. Yes, keep a manual.

Bottom line: Nissan is simply chasing profits, and at the end of the day, they are a business and need to make money – everything else be damned.

Serious enthusiasts everywhere are simply laughing; or, crying.
