Richard Hammond Crashed Rimac Concept One Supercar While Filming TGT

Richard Hammond was involved in a serious crash while filming scenes for an upcoming episode of Amazon’s series, ‘The Grand Tour’, in Switzerland, along with ex-Top Gear co-stars Jeremy Clarkson and James May. The good news is that he’s okay.

The 47-year old host was driving the $1 million Rimac Concept_One on a road that was closed for the Bergrennen Hemberg race, when for unknown reasons, he seemingly lost control of the all-electric supercar.

Luckily, Hammond did not suffer any serious injuries and was able to get out of the 1,224hp (in 2017-spec) car just before it burst into flames.

“Richard was conscious and talking, and climbed out of the car himself before the vehicle burst into flames,” said the program in a statement. “He was flown by air ambulance to hospital in St. Gallen to be checked over, revealing a fracture to his knee.”

The Grand Tour added that the “cause of the crash in unknown and is being investigated”.

Co-host Jeremy Clarkson tweeted that Clarkson tweeted that “It was the biggest crash I’ve ever seen and the most frightening but incredibly, and thankfully, Richard seems to be mostly OK.”

This isn’t Hammond’s first brush with death behind the wheel of a car (or the handlebar, for that matter), as he was famously involved in a near fatal accident in 2006 after crashing a jet-propelled car that left him two weeks in a coma.

This guy’s got a death wish tailgating him. Damn, am glad The Hamster’s okay though.

  • Blade t

He crashed because he was hauling ass on that tiny road ….

    • Stigasawuswrecks

He crashed because he’s Richard Hammond. He’s crashed a ton of cars.

      • LeStori

In reality all is speculation until we know whether there was a fault with the car. So none of us posting actually knows anything about the cause of latest. The previous big one he had was down to ‘mechanical’ failure.

        • Stigasawuswrecks

I know. I was just making fun of him for crashing all of the time. Even he does it to himself.

    • Auf Wiedersehen

Exactly! Look at how fast he entered that narrow curve? And I’m sure this car is not meant to corner well…They are only a 10 year old company with little experience….and this car is a concept so it should have been driven like it.

Hammond needs to retire from this kind of stuff before he’s dead.

  • Maher

I’m sorry, I love the show, but it’s very stupid of them to drive that fast in a road surrounded by houses. Look how close that house was to where the car crashed.

    • alexxx

it seemed to me also that he was driving very fast…

    • Vassilis

      Dude, it’s a racing event!

      • Maher

I’m not saying Richard is the only one to be blamed here, but the organizers doesn’t seem to care about those living in that area. No one wants to see their house burning down because someone was driving fast in their area.

      • S3XY

So slow down at a turn? ROFL

        • Vassilis

Well, yeah. I’d like to think there was something wrong with the car.

    • Shane

They have a multiple day race in Canaduh where they race through small villages and people crash next to houses. Also the Isle of man TT. Racing like this is the best.

    • rover10

That’s the problem, no one thinks about the full envelope of risk, they simply don’t have the luxury of time. Film schedules are very tight however, someone has now to sit down with the family and talk about the risks?

  • Six_Tymes

Glad he is OK!!! probably forgot how heavy a rimac is. Huge battery packs are very heavy to haul around. hence his slide and the weight carrying the car so far. I’m pretty sure that’s why you never saw this car going fast around corners in test videos.

    • Milica Jac

I don’t think that weight had much to do with him sliding out here. He was just going to fast. And he was breaking way too late.

      • Six_Tymes

HEAVY weight = massive inertia. I wish we could compare, lets say a 911 (any new model) and hit that turn at the same speed and brake at the same point (albeit late) I bet he could handle the car enough to correct it and not crash. The Rimac is an extremely heavy car, a very very fast turd.

    • S3XY

Excuses excuses. He’s an idiot for taking that turn that fast. End of discussion.

  • GobbleUp

The Grand Tour is a very poorly done show, such a disappointment. Cancel it.
These 3 tools should be fired. And I loved them before…now they are unimaginative posers.

    • Galaxium

You’re not the one who’s also thinking this. TGT has been shrinking a lot in views, episode after episode. I think Amazon only picked them up for the sake of seeming like a superior option to traditional cable box companies.

    • The BBC should never have fired Clarkson.

    • Auf Wiedersehen

I agree. I loved these guys together on TG but this show is just not done it for me. They seem to be 3 old guys trying to recapture something long lost. They just need to stop. BBC current TG is FAR better and if you say it’s not, you are in compete denial or a blind fan-boy of CH&M.

  • Six Thousand Times

Glad nobody was seriously hurt. Hamster’s ego will take a beating come season two.

  • you don’t need to investigate the cause of the crash…

  • kimbentsen

That is what the Hamster does. Chrashing.

  • TB

    Glad to hear he’s OK!

Unless there was a fault, it appears that Hammond thought it was going to be a right hand corner when it was a left hand corner.

Not nice to see an electric car being essentially as dangerous as a car using flammable fuel. ‘Saving the environment’ whilst sitting on top of a big ‘explosive’ battery pack is a wonderful thing to do…

    • S3XY

You actually might be more of an idiot than the driver himself.

  • S3XY

What an idiot taking that corner that fast. Stupid people will be stupid. Can only get lucky so many times.

  • TrevP

Whoever was filming seemed to take the camera off the car right when it crashed

  • ZV3N

He should have kept the foot down and just go straight. That would have been cool
