Next VW Golf GTI And R To Get More Power And Less Weight

Volkswagen is working on a number of upgrades that will make performance variants of the eighth-generation Golf the best ever.

German publication Autobild reports that new Golf GTI and Golf R models will launch for the 2019 model year and that the GTI will benefit from a significant bump in power. In fact, it is reported that the entry-level 2.0-liter turbo’d four of the GTI will get an additional 40 hp, bringing its total up to 250 hp, right in line with the 252 hp Ford Focus ST.

As for the new VW Golf R, it will closely target the Ford Focus RS with an additional 45 hp ensuring it is even quicker than the reigning king of the hot hatch market.

Alongside the horsepower gains, it is suggested that the Golf R will shed between 35 and 70 kg and should have a much more aerodynamic body.

Looking beyond these performance models, the entire Golf range will receive an overhauled interior dominated by a fully-digital gauge cluster and a large central infotainment screen, not dissimilar to what you find on the current Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

this sounds interesting. lighter weight is just what this car needs.

Agreed. 350 HP R is going to be sick, the current one is pretty sick right now

One request: FENDERS!! For G-d’s sake, look at what fenders do for AMG Black series, the new Camaro and Mustang’s look, the WRX vs the regular Impreza, the M3 vs the regular 330i, the Demon vs. the regular Challenger SRT, the Grand Sport Corvette vs the Stingray… Wider fenders make a sporty car look, well, like a properly sporty car! The Golf Gti and R have always been brilliant to drive, they just look like little minivans which doesn’t sit well with anyone looking for a hot hatch. Fenders would differentiate the performance models from the mundane base Golf’s, allow for a wider track, and get everyone all riled up and in line to buy one. FLARED FENDERS!

and please, a FACELIFT ! STOP making it look like an effin Polo (a family hatch, i mean, and make it look sporty) !

I believe a significant selling point of the GTI has been its clean appearance. If you would like a vehicle that screams looks at me, I think you would be best served with another manufacturer.

“German publication Autobild reports that new Golf GTI and Golf R models will launch for the 2019 model year…..”

Incorrect. In actuality, we’re talking about the 2020 Golf range, not 2019. That’s an important distinction.

The Autobild article which is cited, says the following in the sub-headline: “Generation number 8 will not come until the end of 2019!” (google translate). The second paragraph of the article states, “…but the eighth generation of the bestseller will be rolling out to the IAA (Frankfurt Auto Show) in September 2019.”

This is mere speculation on my part but if the Mk 8 Golf isn’t making its European debut until September 2019, I doubt we will see it land on North American shores before the spring of 2020. I just placed an order for the 2018 R which will be available late September/beginning of October (this year) in North America. While I could probably hold out for another year before I need a new car, I can’t wait two more years and then some.

I am sure you will not be disappointed with your new R once you see the Mk 8. lol after all its still an R. Congrats on the purchase!
