Dump Truck Driver Smashes Into Highway Sign In Texas

A dump truck has caused mayhem in Houston, Texas after smashing through a street sign on the northbound lanes of Interstate 820.

Video of the incident shows the bed of the truck in its raised position, presumably not to the knowledge of the driver. The truck then slams into the sign, ripping down the entire steel structure holding it up above the road and forcing other motorists to aggressively swerve to avoid the falling debris.

The impact was so severe that the cabin of the truck actually twisted and flipped over, blocking all northbound lanes in the process.

ABC13 says the condition of the truck driver isn’t known.

Better the sign than the bridge.

Never driven such a vehicle myself, but I would think that driving with the back up like that would be very noticeable for handling reasons if nothing else.

    • Jay

You’d think so, but there are a lot of accidents like this as if they do not know it’s up at all. The more I see I don’t think the older trucks have a way of notifying the driver that the bed is lifted.

      • Bo Hanan

Or- the driver can look in the back window of his tractor every once in a while and check.

        • Jay

I haven’t driven a dump truck before so we can’t assume that all have back windows, I don’t think they do. Still far too many accidents for none of them to look back and see. I think the trucks with no back windows are the ones that have the accidents like this.

Indeed. The handling would be very noticeably effected.

The weight redistribution would make the front end very light.

  • Dennis James

I suppose something should bip in the cabin the whole time the bed is in the raised position (even accidentally or by malfunction, a switch should be tripped when the bed is not touching the car frame), especially when the car is moving.

    • Auf Wiedersehen

There should be some sort of switch that locks the rear breaks if the bed is even slightly up…and there may be, but I’m sure if there is or is some sort of alarm, it’s either broken or disabled with the safety record of most trucking companies.

  • You See It Happening, But…

The irony is how stupid other drivers are for following this hauler so closely.

    • Auf Wiedersehen

How else would they get video for YouTube and Facebook?

  • REALLY?

  • notice that the guys front window has been broken before the accident occurred.

    • Shane

They’re Mexican, what do you expect? They didn’t have A/C in their vehicle either and it’s like 95 degrees down here. It’s how they roll. Windshield was probably broken like 3 owners ago haha.

      • Timo

        Texas is mexican?

        • Shane

It once was and I’m pretty sure Hispanic is the Majority down here.

      • Scott Carmichael

I guess if my windshield ever cracks, I’m suddenly Mexican?

        • Shane

If you bought it cracked from a dealership flying all Hispanic flags and you don’t ever intend on fixing it, then you might be a Mexican.

  • Michael Smith

Also by law he witnessed a accident…. Wonder if he stopped or did he continue on… If he continued on then he fled the scene of a accident.

    • Auf Wiedersehen

Right! He was obviously not involved and had no legal obligation to stop. Moral obligation? Different story.

  • jaykit

Nice work. This guy does this too right as the monster storm is approaching south of Houston. Total chaos on the roads.

    • gary4205

They are predict 53 inches, around 4 feet, of rain as Harvey hits the Gulf Coast.

  • Braddo

Geez don’t stop or anything to see if he was ok.

  • gary4205

    Wow.

  • rippley5150

That was ridiculous lol How does one not realize that the bed is up?

  • psiqtas

What a moron! Where did he find his semi-license?

  • Auf Wiedersehen

Truck drivers are some of the worst, most dangerous drivers. I have a family member who deals with truck drivers every day at a dock, 3 out of 5 can’t back their truck in to the dock and the shipping and receiving guy has to do it for them. 50% can’t speak English. But hey, let’s entrust them with 60-80,000lbs of machinery on public roads.

  • Karl

This moran should have his license permanently revoked!
