Say Hello To The Long-Awaited BMW Z4 Concept

The first images of BMW’s much-hyped Z4 Concept have just emerged online, shortly before the vehicle’s world debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

The German marque has yet to release official details about the sports car concept but yesterday we learnt that the car does indeed preview the next-generation Z4. If the production car looks anything like the concept, BMW has a winner on its hands.

The concept has been finished in a unique matte orange color and rolls on a set of silver and black wheels. Additionally, it adopts a pointed front end with an angular kidney grille, a pair of large air intakes and aggressive headlights with incorporated LED daytime running lights.

The rear is also particularly impressive and includes small silver buttresses behind both head rests, curvaceous taillights and dual tailpipes painted silver. This being a concept, the wing mirrors and windscreen surround are both stupendously thin.

Stay tuned for more details as the day progresses.

  • Looks rad!

  • Matt

Very very nice. A BMW with some real ‘mojo’ in its design.

You can tell it shares a platform with the new Supra, the belt line and overhangs are very similiar.

    • atomiccow

I think this concept was developed without that fact in mind lol. Overall the wheelbase looks shorter and the car seems wider than everything we’ve seen in the spy shots. So far all the spy shots show the new Z4 and the new Supra being more similar than different. It’s looking like it’ll be the same situation as the MX-5 and the 124 Spider.

It seems that recently some makers have a habit of revealing concepts almost at the same time as the release so I think it’s no secret that these concepts may not be informing the design of the vehicles and rather the opposite might be true. Obviously they will have had real concepts during their design but I can’t imagine that they’ve been sitting on these kinds concepts for years during the respective cars’ designs and only choosing to show them near the final release. I think these concepts are more for publicity and to make a statement of what the makers would do if they could.

      • Mill0048

So what’s the deal, Z4 or Z5? Do we know yet? Are they the same or different vehicles… I’m confused.

        • atomiccow

I think it’s just a matter of the name. All we know is that there is one car that will replace the current Z4 and that it is significantly related to Toyota’s Supra successor. I don’t think we know if that will be called Supra either.

  • casho2015

Nice! Engines and transmissions that’s what we need to know now!

  • Squeezit Wafflenose

Striking as it is, it looks nothing like a BMW. Something like a Toyota or a Nissan with Jaguar and Maserati genes. But maybe that’s a good thing, because all Bimmers look almost exactly the same these days.

  • KenjiK

BMW is turning into the new subaru/peugeot : awesome concepts turning into “meh” production cars (or nothing, in the case of peugeot).

    • Matt

Did Peugeot take the crown from Subaru?

      • KenjiK

LMAO. Thank you, I forget them. I’ll edit that comment. Peugeot is still a very serious contender for the title though.

    • Kaisuke971

What ? The i8, i3, Active Tourer and 4 Series are very close to the concept cars, no reason why the case would be different for this or the 8 Series. So far the X2 has also kept most of the design.

      • KenjiK

The Gran Lusso and the CS Concepts were both supposed to show what the next gen 7 series would look like. I’ll let you judge the result.

The 8 Series and X2 will probably tone down so much that they will be as bland as the rest of their current line up. Sad thing for a brand that used to have some of the most appealing cars on the market.

  • Ahmed Imad

if the platform is fit for a convertable that means the platform is very stiff

  • TheHake

    I like!

  • samurai

Front bumper is a bit too much imho, but if the production car is anywhere near the concept I can see it being a huge success

  • I love it!! My goodness they did a great job here! Smashing!

  • O123

We know what I won’t like then. I’m sure BMW will water this down.

  • OdysseyTag

Nice! This and the 8-er concept show a pretty nice shift in design language from BMW.

    …P.S. Is that Steve Aoki?

    • I’mCallingYouOut

I was wondering the same thing!

  • Дима Петров

Who cares? The production car might be cool, but no where near the beauty of concept. Its a mass production car and making these body panels will result in 100k + price tag. Look at zagato and keep dreaming that any automaker will sell u a supercar designe for 40k.

    • Eric

What makes these body panels so expensive? Look at all the creases and radii that Honda and Toyota are putting on their crap-tastic designs, and those cars aren’t $100K. The reason Zagatos are expensive is that they start with expensive cars, and then only make a handful to keep them exclusive, and have only a few dozen cars with which to offset all their tooling, not to mention the use of manual labour…
Ford is able to give us a 90% Aston Martin in the Fusion at 13% the price. Design isn’t expensive, but it can cost an automaker. Imagine Subaru sales numbers if their cars had a hint of beauty to them!

  • joey

With the mind that this will make it into production with very little, or no change (it’s here to replace, IMHO, a very beautiful car), I must say: for the first time in a very long time, I have no issues with the design of a BMW. The proportions, the front, the rear, the interior, everything about it is so good. This is special, I’m going to give it a little more time maybe I’ll change my mind.

  • Tinky-Winky

Quirky headlights but not weird like 1-series used to have.

    • Subi-Rubicon1

Quirky is not the word I was thinking to use to describe the headlights, but it works better than the one I was thinking of.

  • Aquaflex

I love it! Maybe the supra will be awesome to!

    looks great

  • salamOOn

omg dear bmw move that front axle more to the front….. strech the wheelbase and reduce that terrible front overhang…. because this looks weirdly shrunken

and next time please no photos of weird dude….

  • exeptor

Good design but somehow I can’t see BMW car here. The magic doesn’t happen with grille only.

    • Subi-Rubicon1

I share the sentiment. The essence of BMW eludes this one.

  • Rocket

Some of the design features are a little over-the-top, but that’s what concept cars are about, right? Tone it down just enough, and we’ll be left with a very handsome, very stylish roadster. It hurts to say it, but well done, BMW!

  • Dennis James

It almost doesn’t look like a BMW, but in a good way. I like the clean cut headlights as opposed to the trembling mess of current cars, overall shape is great, but the wheelbase looks to be a tad too short (it will probably look alright after the nose will be trimmed down for production 🙂 )

All in all, the new Z4 looks to be a design win, like the Z8. I was really losing my interest in BMW given the latest bland designs (7-series, 5-series, X3). Hopefully the next 3-series will get something from these new designs, I would really hate to see a bland 3-series for the next 7 years (although, now there is Alfa Giulia as an alternative).

  • BobV12

    A man needs a price

  • lagunas3ca

Wow, way to cheapen the 8 Series Concept by making the Z4 Concept identical to it.

    • Mark S

      Not even close

    • Cool guy

Yea, the front and rear end themes are identical, both concepts look too compact, they do not feel grand or sporty

  • klowik

hope next 3 series will take some of design cue from the Z4 and the 8 series.

  • Samantha Davis

    Beautiful car, creepy model.

    • Samantha Davis

Looks like he is casing it out to steal it.

      • Six Thousand Times

Just say no to the man-bun!

  • Vassilis

    Oh dear…

  • DMJ

I hope that guy is not Steve Aoki. Promoting a drivers car with a DJ that arrives to a stage and connects a pen drive with music and press play…

    • Cool guy

I can’t believe they used Steve Aoki!

  • Subi-Rubicon1

The overall design isn’t bad, however the headlights for me just seem to be too anonymous.

  • bfm01

    Works for me….Coupe?????

    • fgclolz

I hope BMW makes a coupe version too. I read somewhere that BMW will make the roadster exclusively, while Toyota will make the coupe as a Supra. Would prefer to drive a coupe with a 6MT.

  • Mynameis Taylor

I like it. It’s very different from BMW. However I don’t like the cabin. I still think I prefer the AUDI TT

  • Nordschleife

If this is where BMW design is headed as a whole then I am all aboard. This looks stunning to me.

  • john1168

WOW! That’s a great looking concept. It looks like it could be 90% production ready too. Isn’t this the car sharing the platform and powertrain of the next Toyota Supra?

  • Infinite1

The buck teeth look for the front bumper doesn’t look right

  • Sjaak

Dull design, especially from the sides, it looks like a box, with a bunch of crimps and curves. In a whole the proportions do not work, lacks typical BMW genes. Does not make me hungry. An angry “bad” looking man must spice it up, that says enough.

    • john1168

Your new glasses are in the mail 🙂

      • Sjaak

Your fingernailspaintrepairset is on it’s way 🙂

        • john1168

LOL… Thanks. I’ve been wanting one of those for a while…

  • Mark S

Best looking BMW in decades! Some real new and modern design language that still says classic BMW. Very Nice Job! If the production version coms in looking close to this, I think BMW will have a hit on its hands. Begs a manual though. BMW, Loose the man buns….

  • Cool guy

    The headlights are trash

  • Love the simplicity,

  • Tumbi Mtika

Glad one of the twins will look nice… -_-
