VW California XXL Concept Is Big Camper Van For Globetrotters [41 Pics]

VW has taken the concept of the California camper van to the next level with their latest California XXL Concept.

Based on the new Crafter, the new VW California XXL Concept was revealed at this year’s Caravan Salon Düsseldorf featuring an innovative interior architecture and all the latest tech features.

The California XXL Concept comes with a fixed panoramic roof, an extended rear section that allows the formation of an enormous bed, an alcove for the children, all-wheel drive for year-round use and pneumatic suspension among other.

The modern interior architecture is planned down to the last detail, featuring a retractable wet room, a heated and cooled bed, an extendible work surface, underfloor heating and a wide range of functions that can be controlled via a mobile app.

The latest VW camper van concept is 102mm higher than a Crafter panel van with the ‘Super High Roof’, allowing for a standing height of up to 2,2m. Between the front and rear bumpers, the VW California XXL is 5,986mm long but the overall length reaches over 6,2m if you consider the extended rear section.

Power is provided by a 177PS Euro 6 turbodiesel engine that’s paired to VW’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system. Having a pneumatic suspension optimizes the ride comfort as well as simplifies horizontal alignment of the camper van when parked.

  • Cool , love it !

Very clever and innovative, plus creating many cool ideas. It’s amazing just how ambient lighting has taken off in the motorhome industry. Mood lighting transforms the most prosaic of interiors at night. I fear this particular concept will be very expensive, and it may be wiser to look at cheaper alternatives on other chassis?

While I’d much prefer an offroad camper like the Iveco Daily 4×4 https://i.ytimg.com/vi/jXqHjSTAbEk/hqdefault.jpg, I must admit this is a masterclass in industrial design, even for a concept. Especially in the field of motor homes, where the “design”´is usually pathetically dated, uninspired, and generally lazy. It’s been a while since I liked the look of a VW, and it’s a camper…

The Earthroamer for me. You know you have fully entered middle age when you’d take an offroad camper over a Lamborghini any day.

    Nice features, probably pricey….

      Probably very pricey.

I don’t like it very much. It’s so ‘cold’ and sterile. And unless the model is 6′ tall… not very roomy.

  • VERY NICE FOR WHAT IT IS.
BUT GLOBETROTTING I THINK OF A JET NOT A MOBILE HOME.

Having a blast studying the details of this vehicle in every photo! This is DECADES ahead of what’s in the market in the U.S and a pleasant change (unless your a fan of wall to wall artificial wood grain printed particle board).

  • Looks nice, but way too tall. Worried about the balance…

Let’s name it after a place it’ll never go.

My favorite irony is the Chevrolet Monte Carlo. As if people who go to Monte Carlo would drive the Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Lmao.

I don’t believe Subaru ever raced the Baja ute in Baja California, Mexico.
