Which Is The Fastest Super Hot Hatch? RS3 vs AMG A45 vs Civic Type R vs Golf R vs Focus RS

Are you in the market for a mega hot hatch? Well, if so, then buying the fastest of them all is in all likelihood, at the top of your list.

But which is the fastest? CarWow’s Mat Watson set out to answer this question by pitting the Audi RS3, Mercedes-AMG A45, Honda Civic Type R, Volkswagen Golf R, and Ford Focus RS against each other.

The first part of the video shows the five high performance compact cars drag racing a quarter mile, which has a clear winner, while the second part brings the numbers forward, reminding us that Ingolstadt’s machine is the most powerful of all.

It puts down 400PS (395hp) and 480Nm (354lb-ft) of torque from a 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbocharged engine. Naught to 100km/h (62mph) takes 4.1 seconds and top speed is electronically capped at 250km/h (155mph), though it can be raised to 280km/h (174mph).

The Audi RS3 is followed closely by the Mercedes-AMG A45, which has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo’d engine that makes 381PS (376hp) and 475Nm (350lb-ft) of torque. The 0 to 100km/h (62mph) acceleration is done in 4.2sec, and top speed is limited to 250km/h (155mph) as well.

The other three hot hatches are slightly less powerful, with the Golf R having 310PS (306hp), the Civic Type R delivering 320PS (315hp), and the Focus RS making 350PS (345hp).

Before letting these five powerful machines rest, the reviewer pitted them against each other one last time, from a rolling start, with some surprising (or not?) results.

the Typer R sounds a bit slow with that much power, its slower than luxury sedans with the same power

It was also one of the only three hatches here to use a manual instead of a dual clutch..

      • seriously

5.8 seconds is slow regardless of the transmission with 320+hp in a compact car……the Fusion is faster saddled with more weight and more size, the Toyota Camry is faster, the WRX also a manual by the way is faster, the STI also a manual by the way is faster , a Camaro and Mustang 4 cylinder are faster with a manual…fanboys making excuses or not this thing is slow given its specs. The Impala SS was also FWD has 300hp from a heavy v8 and is faster, do I really need to keep going on and on???

    • Dennis James

It’s also FWD, it will have a disadvantage from a standstill.

    Results are not surprising….

So basically a 10 year old 240 hp Honda S2000 beats the 320 hp Civic Type R.

  • pcurve

isn’t type r fastest around the ring?

  • McF1

A great comparison. The Audi RS3 is incredible in a straight line.
The Honda Type R was impressive with the rolling start, beating the Ford Focus RS and the VW Golf R.
I was disappointed with the 1/4 mile time for the manual Golf R, with the Type R just beating it.
If one was looking at buying a Golf R, for straight line speed the DSG would be the go.

    • KidRed

The Civic was only more impressive than the Golf R. It barely caught the Focus and that was near the end. It otherwise was smoked in both tests.

Torque wins. Ford, Civic and Golf R were close in HP, but the Ford had way more torque and it showed. The Civic just eeked out the Golf R in torque and the finish was just as tight.

Also, DC autos are the king of speed.
