Following its spy debut a few days earlier, the upcoming BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe was spotted again, in what appears to be a base trim form.

Unlike the previous prototype we showed you earlier this week, this one appears to be fitted with less aggressive bodywork, smaller wheels and a more subtle dual-exhaust setup.

Codenamed F44, the new four-door 2-Series variant is set to rival the Mercedes CLA and the Audi A3 Sedan when it hits the market around 2020, a year after the new generation 1-Series makes its own debut.

Just like the upcoming 1-Series, the 2-Series Gran Coupe will be front-driven as the two models will be based on the same underpinnings. However, BMW will offer an all-wheel drive system as an option to select powertrains, including the range-topping versions.

The engine range will be comprised by three- and four-cylinder petrol and diesel units, with hybrid versions also planned to make their appearance. There will be no six-cylinder option this time, so if you’re in the market for a 240i version, make it happen before the rear-driven compact BMW goes out of sale.

As for the design, BMW is reportedly planning to evoke the spirit of the 2002 with the new 2-Series, which should translate into a more different visual character from the closely-related 1-Series.
