Front-Drive Super-Hatches: VW Golf GTI Clubsport S vs Renault Megane RS 275 Trophy-R

Hot hatches don’t come much more capable than these two: the VW Golf GTI Clubsport S versus the 2014 Renault Megane RS Trophy-R.

The French hot hatch may be out of production but many believe that no rival could ever beat it in outright fun up until the day it went out of production. This one however is the limited 275 Trophy-R version, a balls-to-the-wall stripped version of the standard model which kickstarted the whole Nurburgring lap record theme.

It was considered the GT3 RS of the hot hatches and that tells everything you wanted to know about the Renault Megane RS 275 Trophy-R.

The Golf GTI Clubsport S on the other hand was a big surprise from VW, given that the Germans were never really into hardcore track-oriented versions of the talented Golf GTI. But they did it anyway, proving that they know how to build a proper track weapon out of a Golf.

How does the older Megane stack up against the mighty Golf? We’ll have to watch evo magazine’s latest video to find out.

  • Bash

I would still take the Golf GTI.

    • sidewaysspin

Yes you would because of badge snobbery over a french car, predictive shallow behaviour from most unsophisticated folk.

      • Bash

Just keep spinning side ways and go away. lol

    • alexxx

      Always Megane :-))

      • Bash

        Fine with me :-))

  • D83

Forget one name : Civic Type-R, mass production car you can buy (Not track edition or limited edition)

    • Matt

The fact that the CTR isn’t a track or limited edition is exactly the reason it isn’t mentioned… so you kind of contradicted yourself.

  • Finkployd

Which one will be the fastest to the repair shop though? ⏱🏁

    • dubfun

Renault is not available in the ‘States, but my personal experiences with VW would lead me to believe that the GTI could win that race.

  • PlonPlon

The Renault looks better to me. Not a fan of the rear of the Golf.

  • TheHake

Both great cars. I’ll have the Golf.
