Honda Clarity PHEV Boasts Class-Leading All-Electric Range

With its EPA range rating of 47 miles (75 km) on a full charge, the 2018 Honda Clarity plug-in hybrid has earned the highest EV range among all midsize plug-in hybrids.

Scheduled to arrive in dealerships later this year, the Clarity PHEV also received an EPA fuel economy rating of 110 combined MPGe, and an impressive gasoline only 44/40/42 MPG (5.3/5.8/5.6l/100km) rating.

“We think the combination of a class-leading 47 miles of all-electric driving range rating and a large, luxurious 5-passenger package will give us an advantage in the plug-in hybrid game”, said Honda exec, Ray Mikiciuk.

“The Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid represents the dawn of a new era, setting the path to a new generation of Honda products that will bring electrified technology into the mainstream.”

The Clarity also has an overall EPA driving range of 340 miles (547 km), helped by its efficient 1.5-liter 4-cylinder petrol engine. All together, the Clarity PHEV puts down 181 horsepower and 232 lb-ft (314 Nm) of torque, with the help of a 17-kWh battery, which can be recharged in 2.5 hours at 240 volts.

Honda is expecting the Clarity PHEV (available in Standard and Touring trims) to be the volume sales leader in the lineup.

Wow, 47 miles. Grab the suitcases, let’s roll.

  • THEY’RE JUST DRAGGING OUT THE INTRODUCTION OF THE DIFFERENT VARIANTS OF THIS CAR TO THE POINT IT’S NO LONGER INTERESTING.

Why do you need to shout your opinion? Relax dude.

It is a shame that the very nice front-end (looks very cool and techy in real life) of the FCV version is undermined by the awkward rear-end proportions of the car. I believe this is due to the fuel tank, as the Mirai suffers from the same problem.

I wish Honda had put that drivetrain in the new Accord, although I understand why, from a pure efficiency standpoint, the Clarity platform is probably more suitable.

I don’t know if the second gen Volt is still flying the “Extended Range Electric Vehicle” flag, or if the tech is more “parallel hybrid” now, but the Volt gets 53 miles of range from its 18.4kWh battery. It also gets the same 42 MPG combined, and slightly less of the useless MPGe rating, at 106.

One thing that is “clear” about the Clarity….it looks awful.

    Good god that’s ugly!

Quite possibly the ugliest car of 2017.

Looks awkward, like the wheels are too close together.
