Japan-Only Subaru BRZ STI Sport Edition Looks Sleek

Ever since Subaru took the wraps off the BRZ, fans have been waiting for an STI version. While that high-performance model may never come, buyers in Japan can get their hands on a limited edition version that can at least look the part.

Called the BRZ STI Sport, this special model comes in a unique shade of Cook Grey Khaki. To go with the unique paint, Subaru has also given this special BRZ blacked-out wheels and a red interior.

No word on any performance upgrades under the hood, but there’s a retuned suspension to complement the otherwise mostly cosmetic enhancements inside and out.

Like what you see? Try not to like it too much, because Subaru will only make 100 examples, to be sold exclusively in Japan, with customers to be selected by lottery.

The car will make its debut at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show, where we can also expect to see the Toyota 86 GR by Gazoo Racing, set to appear along with a handful of other debuts from both automakers.

I think the BRZ/GT86 haven’t aged well, both inside and outside. And whilst there is a playable character when driving, the lack of any power train upgrades since launch and the modest power output, that just gets more and more modest as hot hatches get powerful every year, helps little. I mean in the meantime the average B segment hot hatch is more powerful, let alone C segment cars that sell for comparable money…

Yes, the MX5 has a similar power deficit (though in the Fiat 124 the T-Jet adds useful performance and sound), it has a cult following and name, and, as a drop top, has always kind of evaded the “performance only” corner.

I think they have aged incredibly well. Especially the 2012-2016 86. Very good looking car inside & out.

  • I LIKE THE SEATS.

I feel like Toyota and Subaru missed a great opportunity with this car. They had something amazing to begin with, and yet they just left it there to dry. They didn’t give it more power, they didn’t fully explored its potential… It’s a shame.

Hopefully they expand on it next time, rather than use this version as evidence of a lack of market.

What is so wrong with that engine that they’re so averse to adding any power??!?!! I’ve never seen any company so adamant about ignoring customers and not being able to extract any more power from their engines.
